The best would be anything with the word Sony on it. (IMO) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I've got a Samsung SyncMaster 750S that I got for a good price (canadian). Not sure what it would cost in your money though.

Check it out here (http://samsungelectronics.com/products/monitor/750s_1.html).

It really is a beauty, and the world looks so much better at 17 inches!

I doubt you'll get a decent 17" monitor for that. Keep in mind that a monitor is one of the most important pieces of equipment that you have. Why? Your eyes are looking at it. And if you don't get a good one, you can get eye strain and put undo pressure on them.

If you have to, save up and get a really good one.

Scan (http://www.scan.co.uk) do the Iiyama 17" (S700JT1) for a good price within your budget (£158 inc). Iiyama have a good reputation aswell, my friends 17" Iiyama looks great - don't know the specifics about this one though.

Got to say Sony here also.

I just bought a top-of-the-line Mitsubishi... yet I *know* I would've been happier with a Sony.

Socal, Are you saying you WISHED you had gotten the Sony? Are you NOT happy with the Mits? I'm really close to buying my new 21" this month and really leaning towards the G810 Viewsonic as one of my wholesalers carries it locally http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Well, Mntsnow... the Sony GDM-F400 isn't made anymore and I just couldn't manipulate my mind enough to spend over $1,400 for monitor :/

I looked hard at the Viewsonic G810/P810 series myself and the reviews are really good. Since I already have a Sony and like the "tron" type monitors - aperture grille vs. shadow mask, I chose the Mitusubishi 2040u. Not to say that the shadow mask type isn't good either.

The most difficult thing for me in choosing a monitor of this size was the lack of available displays... I couldn't "see" them to compare them, therefore couldn't take one home to test. So, basically I was buying blind and going on my experience with Sony's 'tron' aperture grille, and reviews.

I'm not *unhappy* with the Mitsubishi - if I was that unhappy I'd return it.. but it just doesn't have the ... vibrancy of color as my old Sony 15" either, IMO.

I have to agree. I have had a trinitron 17 since 95, and she is still as bright and sharp as ever, unless I forget my glasses... LOL Glad I spent the money on it!

We have 2 Iiyama inthe lab and they looked great but are both on the fritz after 3 years of heavy, heavy use. Our Viewsonics of the same age are still running strong. I would have to say that my Sony looks the best of any monitor I have seen. They are great. Second i would go with Viewsonic.

Thanks for clairifying for me Socal http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

You just had me a little bit nervious there for a moment! LOL I do like the Mits monitor as well as I have seen them but none of my current wholesalers carry them http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif and the best of the 21" that they do carry is the Veiwsonic one (which I have seen aswell and can say the "graphic" series is better than the "professional" version in that size) and I do have to agree it seems that all (execpt for the really really expensive ones do lose color vibrancy at this size.?)

Mntsnow... sounds perhaps I should've done a little "networking" with you to find wholesalers in my area where I could've gone to view! I'm not unhappy enough to pay shipping-out on a 70lb monitor lol, but my next purchase WILL be a Sony! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Oh, re your last question about the color vibrancy on the larger viewables.. I've *heard* that (from ONE person) but then I don't know and hesitate to say it is so. If you can get to actually view the monitor for yourself, that's undoubtedly the best way to go.
