I just got my March bill from GTE (undisputably the WORST telco carrier I've ever had the misfortune of wandering into it's exclusive domain: low quality and high prices. What a combo!)
FCC regulations have gone through that allow all land line telco providers in the State of Illinois to charge a per-call fee, as well as a metered per-minute fee. Naturally, all land line telcos in IL now practice this.
I just got a $90 phone bill for 19 days of local telephone call usage.
Wondering if there are any alternative connections to the internet for us country dwellers who will never see the likes of ADSL or cable modems? What are the costs? Etc.
Thanks in advance,
Dave

How about Carrier Pigeon? Kind of a low data transfer rate, but they work for peanuts (bird seed, actually).
Pros:
Low net traffic, your kids'll love 'em, and they're not subject to conventional hacking (how do you hack a pigeon?).
Cons:
Your ping will probably be around 20(days), the only internet games you could play would have to be turn based, and transfer rates will prob never peak over 100 kilobits per week.

Another con might be that if your neighbor has better seed than you do, your ping may extend to the next ice age.

I hope the people of Illinois can put a screaming stop to those kinds of charges!!
DON'T let that spread outside your state, please!!

Yeah. No kidding.
Believe you me, my mind has already set to work on my alternatives:
1) Write off these expenses on my taxes with logs of PCAnywhere dialins for remote Server management.
2) Storm the capital with tear gas, find the people responsible for bringing this law into effect, and publicly lynch them for their insolence.
3) Give up computers and technology for membership in a free-spirit agrarian society with 24-hour orgiastic celebrations and all the drugs you can stomach (or inhale).
