My daughter asked me what brand of camera would be good . She had in mind a conventional 35mm. I asked her about both of us going in on a digital camera. Could ya'll give us some idea of type and brand for all around home photography, something basic but fairly good quality.. Thanks http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Hop over to MEGAPIXEL.NET (http://www.megapixel.net/index.html) and go thru their site. You'll find it helpful. They have a good review section.

I like the Nikons and Olympus offerings.

3.3+ megapixel cameras are due out shortly. Info and reviews are out.

Here's a couple more info sources:

I've got a Fuji MX1200, and an HP PhotoSmart C20. (having two was kind of an accident...)

Anyway, both are nice units, just different features. Would recommend either one.

I recommend the Kodak DC240 for the low end (well, mid-range actually... I have one myself) and a Nikon Coolpix 900 or Kodak DC2xx (some number higher than 40) for the high end. The Nikon Coolpix 800 is also pretty good for mid-range.

Check out mobshop: http://www.mobshop.com/browse?category_id=669

And for 20% off (no miniumum) at mobshop, scroll down to mobshop coupons here (there are 3 of them) http://flamingoworld.com/coupon2.htm

If I were buying now, that's what I'd do. Keep an eye on that section of MobShop... they rotate different models of cameras through and some pretty nice deals can be found.

Joel's right on the money. I just got one of the Kodak DC-290s at Mobshop for about $480: half of what it usually costs. I received the camera a week ago and am very pleased-- it's really easy to use. It's a relatively large, heavy, camera, though, so I'm worried that it will be bad for taking astrophotographs (will weigh down our telescope and screw up the tracking.)

My parents have a Fuji MX-1200 which they seem happy with: it was less than $200, too. Terrific for spamming me with baby pictures of my nephew. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

NO DIGITAL, for generic home use. Expensive, time consuming, paltry quality compared to silver emulsion(sp) photography. I've been a so-so shutterbug for 25+ yr. I used asa 25 slide and print film till the day they stopped making it..Now I'll only use Fuji 100asa. Kodak film is not as sensitive and has excessive grain compared to Fuji. . I have a 1.3 mega pixel Casio 5000, at work we have a collection of 7 or 10 various cameras all over 1 megapixel. I don't see the big deal, I guess what we use them for they work OK. We shoot machinery and parts to E-mail. I use mine to document the recycling containers at work as to voluntary co-operation. At Home,, Portraits of people,, yech. For marine use, I buy a $10 Fuji waterproof, the pics scan GREAT and blow to 8x10. When a throw away camera equals a $699.00(1999)camera, I'll keep my money.. my .02 worth DrVette

It all depends upon the final destination of the image. If your family photo album, then perhaps 35mm film is best. If the web or a digital archive, digital cameras are superior. Try getting a super high res 1600x1200 image to look decent from a scanned 35mm film print, besides being time consuming to scan it. I have taken a number of photos using the Coolpix 950, printed them out using an Epson Stylus 600 on 8x10 glossy photo paper, and it looks completely comparable, if not superior, to a standard 35mm print.

Joel: no, I wanted to show off the photos http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif. All: Keep in mind that those photos on the Bimmer site are compressed .jpg's. The originals are higher quality.

Thanks guys for the replies. I'll probably absorb most of the cost of the camera. You know how kids are!!! So much to choose from
like opening a can of worms! Will explore your suggestions, which I certainly appreciate, esspecially the photos of the Hyndau from Sysopt's. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif LMAO

Yo Pick! Remember, with the new 3.3 megapixel cam's coming out, all the others will be dropping. I just love how that works!

I've got an AGFA, don't know something or other model. Just a base-line cam, but it does okay for taking shot to display on the web. Where you don't need or necessarily want a huge resolution. But, i'm looking, or will be looking for possibly a 2mp cam myself. Actually, check out the kodak dc240. I read some good things about that model on ZDtv.

Also, i think it's sony that makes cameras that use 1.44 diskets for memory medium. That's kinda handy, especially if you're at a friend's and want to upload images. Never worry about cables, etc...

Would like to get some firsthand feedback about those cam's...

Later Ed!

I'll post a pic (http://members.home.net/cam-t/Dsc00319.jpg)....or 2 (http://members.home.net/cam-t/Dsc00331.jpg)

As for the sony mavica series, I wouldn't buy a new one...1.44mb's geesh...I have 32mb's and it fills up quickly. I'd hate to carry around 22 floppy's. As for file transfer....USB....plug it in and voila, it acts as a removable drive.

Oh, and you can take mpg's

This camera pictured by Seti is the only one so far that has got my blood pumping. The Carl Zeiss lens is enough to convince me that it is superior to a more mega pixel camera with a poorer lens. As far as what Pickel was asking , What I thought anyway, was a throw around camera for the girl. Maybe I'm a cheapskate but I feel uncomfortable spending four or more "C" notes on a thing like that.. btw, I da south we iz poe.. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Nice one ,Seti, but like the Corvette Dr. says , we's poe folk down heer in Dixie, but I do want someting better than a throw away camera. The DC 240 seems to be quite popular so., I'll look into that one first. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
