I wasn't sure if this was Tech or OS so i posted here to be safe.
I have a cd with a movie on it but it won't play in media player, quicktime, real player The directory it's in says mpeg but the file ext is .dat.
A couple of friends have watched it on media player so if anyone knows why it ain't working or what i can play it with i'd like to here about it.
I'm using Win2k.

You can rename it to .mpg and it will work, or tell media player to open that file extension. The dat file is like a .vob for dvd's.

I copyed the file to the HD and renamed it .mpg .
I just get this error message.
No combination of filters could be found to render the stream.

Hmmm, anyone else? This should work, are you sure you have a valid file? Has another program taken over the file association?

Use Xingmpeg player. I think it associates .dat files with mpeg movies. Have had trouble with it on my computer as after loading it took all the associations of .dat which i had already used for data from work.
Worth a try.

Sorted by Donkey http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif cheers m8.
Xing played the .dat no problem.
Three m8's watched the movie before me and all use'd Media Player so i checked Microsoft and it says nothing about Media Player supporting .dat files.
I don't understand whats going on but now i've seen the movie i don't care. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
btw the movie was garbage. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif(for want of a better expression)
