Try www.activewin.com (http://www.activewin.com) or www.win98central.com (http://www.win98central.com) . They have cool tricks and tell you almost every thing you need to know http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
In System properties do the following:
Under devices/sys devices/dma controller, set to 64K reserved.
Under devices/cdrom and devices/"hard drives" or "generic type47" set dma to on.
Under devices/hard disk controllers set dual ide channel settings to "both channels enabled" .
Under performance/file system set typical role to network server for hard disk, for floppy disk, uncheck the search for new floppy, under cdrom set to quad or higher type.
Undre file system set virtual memory manually to twice your ram size or a minimum of 100M, equal settings in min and max boxes.
If you have Office installed, go to Find Fast in control panel, highlight the selected task, click the file menu and stop the current task.
Ok all confirmation boxes and reboot after the changes are made.
This will keep Windows working in the fastest and most stable mode.

try winboost out...and don't forget to set your machine to a network server instead of desktop computer, and set a permanent swap file. don't forget bios tweaks as well. Sometimes limiting vcache can help multitasking too
