I am thinking about getting a TV card (capable of recording TV shows in MPEG format) for my computer, sort of using it as a digital VCR. So I am trying to decide on what kind of TV card to buy.

Can someone recommand a good TV card? I am also wondering about the approx. size of the MPEG file generated by the TV card (how many MB/second?). Thanks!

Capture size of 176 x 144
1 min mpg is 2.26mb

You gonna need a very large and fast hard drive to accomplish what you're wanting to do.
A larger resolution will take up more space.

Size, length, and audio sizes will vary the size of the mpg.

176x144 does not sound like a good resolution for TV. I have heard some good things about the Pinnacle Studio PCTV. Does anyone have that? Would you recommand it?

Btw, I use a GeForce 2 graphics card... I know some graphics cards do not work well with PC tuners.

I just bought a All in wonder Radeon, so far I am very pleased with it. I won't need to capture any PAL format video, which I have heard can be tricky. You need a pretty good system, I have an athlon 850 and 256PC133 RAM, TV and capture are great, I can record at the highest resolution at a steady rate. I only get a little over an hour on 3 gigs of space though, w/ 'good' quality. I might recommend you go get a cheaper 10 or 15 gig drive just for keeping the video on, since they are under 100 bucks.

I was using the 176 x 144 as a size reference only.
Small 1 minute video w/ audio being the size of 2.26mb

Compare to a 800 x 600, 1min vid w/ audio will be between 7 to 10mb.

How much time do you want to spend on this? A properly filtered and deinterlaced capture, can take quite a while to render but gives superior results. You can capture strait to mpeg, but it won't look very good.

Take these two images.

The first is a raw capture, with the second being filtered, resized, and rendered to the final format, in this case mpeg4v2.
The Pinnacle will work, but I prefer the Hauppage line because of better driver support. I'll link the clip that the rendered shot came from, but it's pretty good sized. Clip is 24meg, 512X384 done in mpeg4v2. http://www.jfreeland.net/video/farfinal1.avi
Sorry for all the edits, but I finaly got a shorter clip up. Same piece but only 10 seconds worth and four megs http://www.jfreeland.net/video/farclip.avi
