Why not a WD? It seems to me many people have had a good experiance with them and their performance is up to par.

It seems to me it is more of a matter of opinion. I have two Maxtors and a Seagate and very happy with all three.
IBM makes an exellent drive from what I have read.
You could check out some reveiws here http://www.storagereview.com/

ROFL!! Here we go again!! I think the last time I made an anti-WD remark it was jad who came to their rescue.

Almost every WD drive I've had has gone south, so my views are very tilted.

Follow jad1234's link to Storage Review for a more level opinion and some hard numbers. (It's all about the numbers.)

Well, I am a WD advocate also. I loke their drives. They are second to IBM in my mind. The one I dislike most is the Maxtor. It is the only drive I have had to RMA and I have had problems OCing it. Too bad that's what I usually run into when I can get good deals...

Modern WD's are more than cross licensed with IBM, they're also built on the same assembly line with the same parts. 2 yrs ago WD was ready to sink, IBM needed production help and now both their stocks are up. IBM has the R&D, WD supplied the cheap over seas labor

The thing with WD is is that they have a Very Good aftersale service, As yet I have never had even the slightest quibble from them with a return thats faulty, I can't say the same for Quantum though, still waiting on reply for RMA number for return of that Atlas that caught fire, and its got a warrant till 2001, week now and still no reply from them.
so find out which HD company give best back up in your area, before buying. 2c worth.

IBM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

love IBM drives.... they have always been very reliable, but I go with what I can afford, I have had bad exp with Quantom drives so they are the only ones I shy away from.

my 2 cents (converted to american funds = .9 cents)

sorry for the edit KING TYPO kicks in again

I have a Quantum Fireball KA-plus 7200 rpm right now. I added a hard drive fan to it. You can touch the hard drive at anytime and it's not warmer than the ambient air aound it. It runs at 32 deg celcius. Yes it does get warm without the fan. The highest I have seen it is 41 deg celcius w/o the fan. I have a temp probe on it that came with the IWill MoBo.

By the way.... this is my 4th Quantum Hardrive I've dealt with. 2 in previous systems that are still going strong. (One of them is 4 years old. An old Fireball 2.1 gig). And I just put one in my buddies confuser identical to the one I am running now.
