usb modem?

Ok someone told me that IE and netscape slow downloads down considrably and that a usb modem is quit a bit faster than a isa or pci
modem.

I'm pretty dubious about the netscape and IE slowing down file transfers and i've no idea about usb modems.

Anyone know?
