Windows 2000
Duel Pentium III 866
512k Ram
Dell Precision 420
Trying to install video card but having serious problems. The card is a 32mb 3D Labs Oxygen VX1. The PC will only boot in VGA mode. Removed old drivers and even cleaned the registry before installing the drivers for the new card. The PC will boot to a black screen with a blinking curser in the upper left hand corner. Unless you boot into VGA mode. ????

Have you tried safe mode.???
Have you tried changing settings in the BIOS.?

If it works in safe mode, then reinstall the drivers from there and check to see if there are any conflicts.!

If it doesn't, most probably the card has gone bad.!

It won't boot in safe mode.
Card is brand new.
Bios is set to AGP 4x
System boots, see's the card, but won't load windows. Just sits there with black screen. If you hit F8 and hit VGA mode it will boot into windows. 256 colors and no adjustments. "Unkown Monitor"/"Unkown adapter" ......
This is a work system , we really need to get it back up. Not sure what to do.

Have you checked their website to see if an updated driver is availible? Also, make sure it's installing the driver for your exact card. Last time I had a problem like that (exactly like that) it was because the install CD was installing the driver for a slightly different version instead of the card I had.

I don't mean to ask an almost stupid question, but did you kill all the drivers/software for your previous display adapter before installing the Oxygen?

We went through the registry and windows and wiped out all the drivers. We downloaded the latest drivers from 3DLabs and once it says "Please restart system" it boots to a black screen. We even downloaded and installed Win2k SP2. I haven't ever run into a video card that boots into a black screen. The Bios looks good. On start up it detects the card, but after that, once 2K starts to load, it only gets so far then a black screen comes up, with a blinking curser in the upper left hand corner. If I choose "safe mode" the same thing happens. If I select "VGA mode" it will boot into windows. I can't even get it to "safe mode command prompt only". It only boots if VGA is selected. I am not very familier with W2K and or 3D Labs cards, so any help is appreciated.

Hmmmm.. Do you have a motherboard with a Via Chipset??? If so, do you have the latest Via 4 in 1 drivers??

Also, can you check if the card runs hot?
And finally, can you change (via jumper or something) the AGP transfer rate?? So let's say, can you run it at AGP2x??? (just to test it.!)

It was a stupid registry fix. A tech from 3D-Labs mailed our engineer about it. Changed a line or two in the Registry and it booted right up.
