Hi,
There's a special offer in a shop near me on K6-2 500 MHz chips and also the Gigabyte Socket 7 Mobo GA-5AX.
Anybody know if these two are compatible, and are worth purchasing?
Cheers,
Rich

Well, I've never heard of a super 7 motherboard thet was incompatible with AMD chips...
What kind of bios does it have? If it's a VIA (mvp) chipset, you may have to flash it, but that's no biggie as long as you follow the directions - piece of cake.
By the way, what's the deal on the chips? I'd like to have one myself. My board will support up to 600mhz, why waste it. I'd have that 500 dancing at 600 in a week or so.
Anyway, good luck, and let us in on the prices, 'k?

that will work...however....do not count on being able to use a high end AGP video card with that motherboard. i had problems with an overclocked viper v550, and serious problems with a viper v770 ultra.
other than that it is a great board and the chip and board will work together.

Yeah, gigabytes have problems with AGP cards that draw a high voltage.

The deal with the chips? Dunno, last time I saw an AMD K6-II the top-end was 450 Mhz. I looked again today at Dabs.com (UK retailer) and saw K6-2 chips running at 500MMX (100MHz), 533MMX (97 MHz), and 550MMX (100MHz).
Hope this helps.

I use a K6-3 450 with that board (Flashed bios to F3) and V3 3000 AGP.
But the Ali V chipset doesn't like TNT card's even with all the patches thats out (i know i tried a Creative TNT 2 Ultra with no success http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif)
Other than that it's been very stable and when i upgrade i'll be going for another Gigabyte.
btw. make sure the board is Rev 5 if you want to use UDMA 66, below this only support's UDMA 33.
