My old floppy drive was dead and I took it off the case. The problem is win98 seems always assuming the pc has a floppy drive, it keeps looking for drivers from floppy whenever I install a new device. Since the floppy is gone, that always causes lockup. I tried many methods, disable A:, B: and FDC in bios, enable Report no FDD to win95 in bios,
but A: icon still appear in win95. Does anyone have some ideas how I should modify the registry to get rid of floppy drive?

that'll take it out of the "my computer" (gad i hate ms' names), but how about other stuff? i'm pretty sure you need a floppy to run a computer (or maybe i just never thought of running one without). anyone else know?

i know there is a key in the registry that lists the directories where you've installed drivers from, but can't remember where. search and destroy time.

I had a similar problem w/WIN98 when I installed a LS120 and got rid of the reg. floppy. WIN insisted on having two floppy drives...which was a pain because if I clicked on the wrong drive by mistake - it had a fit.

When I eventually reformatted, the problem went away.

Why don't you just put a new FDD in? I know you may not need it but they're so cheap, it'd solve your problem and it may just come in handy someday.

Apple thought of running a computer without a floppy and they make them in all sorts of pretty colours http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

haha, davidx. I guess I have better cooling after taking off the floppy and the cable. Well, once upon a time, I happened to get zip drive taking the place of floppy. Zip was marked as A: 1.44MB by windows and worked well. Can't remember how I did that. probably by running cleansweep or something like that to clear all invalid numbers in the registry.
