I've owned a few Dell systems and they are MUCH better than the rest - believe me I've checked out other companies. All of the parts they put in their computers are name brand and top quality. You get a great deal on everything that comes with your system - right down to the two, great sounding standard harman/kardon speakers that can come with it (you can get better). The ability to easily configure your system the way you want it is one of my favorites.

My friend bought a Compaq **** from Staples. The hardware is all off brand (soundcard, modem, video card, etc.) including the $15 very, very bad speakers. I have never heard speakers that sounded as bad as the two he got with his system. Anyways, enough about speakers (I can't help that I'm an audio freak http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif)

Oh yeah! I almost forgot the most important part of the deal: the 3 YEAR WARRANTY!!! They will send you whatever parts that are broken in your Dell system for free the next business day. They will also send a "techie" to your house if you need that much help. You can call them on the phone and talk with a very knowledgable computer "geek" for hours if you're having trouble. My dad has had them send him a new video card, modem and has spent countless number of hours on the phone with them getting help with his computer.

Sorry if this is a bit long, but I really like Dell and have had a great experience with them. I even went as far as ordering a two-toned hat from them! It's unfortunately on backorder right now, but that's another story.

Dell computers are MUCH higher than they are cracked up to be. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

P.S. - Just so you know, in my comparation of Dell to other companies I checked out HP (ugh!), Compaq (a little better, but not much), Midwest Micro and Gateway (MM and the cow company are pretty much tied).

P.S.S - A word of advice: never buy a computer or a piece of software at Staples.

Thanks Warthog.
I looked at Dells cos we have them at work and they're very reliable. Gateway are more expensive - around £200 more for same spec.

And I really like the Dell GeForce DDR card with 64M on it...

That's what I forgot to mention! Dells exclusively offering that card until it comes out for individual resale. Something you should definately get if you're getting a Dell system. Thanks for reminding me, BBA.

Dell also has some of the best support i have ever dealt with...we ahve several dells at my second job, and when there is a problem, the get it fixed fast...when we had a ram chip that was not being read all the way (it showed as 64 instead of 128) they were ready to send a new motherboard and more ram...

My family has bought 5 Dell computers and they have all been excellent and they are all still running w/out a single problem. (usually hard disks are the 1st to go in a system but Dell uses Maxtors and IBM's which are ROCK SOLID.)

Prob their only drawback is their lack of enthusiasm for supporting the Athlon.

I just don't get it; they're worried about compatibility issues w/ the Athlon but they ship systems with LINUX ?!?!?

BTW Clink, nice jumping green-thingy with arms.

Our University has State contracts with Dell, Gateway and Micron. Of the 3 Dell blows them away. Much nicer systems and more stable. I must say the Micron systems are the worst of the bunch. I'd rather buy Compaq than Micron. Dell is tops in retail. The only better system is a SELF BUILT SYSTEM. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif ...just had to add that. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
