here's one for ya,

Win98; 256ram; 533celeron; AT mobo, 3dfx voodoo3000, plug and play monitor

From time to time (to much actually) it'll go to safe mode and freeze; reboot will start windows telling me display setting are wrong. I reset and I'm OK.
Other times Windows has trouble starting telling me it found new plug and play monitor. I install and reboot.
We're talking alot of booting here.
Any takers
thanks

Check cable, check the seating of the video card in its slot, I've seen 'em just 'vibrate' loose. Another thing may be heat, i had that problem before. G'luck

I used to have Windows boot up in SVGA mode (not quite safe mode, but 640x480x256 colors) every once in a while. I did that because it couldn't detect the monitor correctly. I went into the registry, deleted the three unused monitor entries (incl. default monitor), and it hasn't happened again since.

BE CAUREFUL IN REGEDIT, THOUGH!!!! Back up (File, Export registry file) any keys you delete in case it doesn't work!!!! Then you can boot into safe mode (or normal, if it will work), open regedit, and File, Import Registry File.

thank you and would I search the registry for monitors? Is that the easiest way.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\Monitor.
