i'm tired of my **** old modem line connected to my phone jack, it only has 2 conductors and it SUX!!! Can i do this:
If i get a cable with 4 conductors (fits in RJ11 or standard phones and modems) it's 2 twisted wires, will my connections and downloads get faster. This is like the mini version of the Category 5, or in technical terms "2 Wire Shielded Network cables", these are most of time RJ45 and will not fit into the standard modem, because it's used mainly for LAN. The one i'm making uses the following:
1. RJ11 connectors
2. 4 conductor (2 wire twisted cables)

i will use that than my original 2 conductor regular non twisted phone line.

do u think it will help????

I don't see how. RJ45 uses 4 pairs because it needs 2 signal lines, it twists them into 2 pairs and uses a differential amp on the end to remove common voltage noise.

Your modem uses 2 wires and one signal. Adding extra wires won't improve the stability at all. Also you must be sure that if you did this, the 2 wires that are used are in the same pair, or you would make a much worse cable than standard.

the catagory 5 LAN cable that is RJ 45 uses 8 CONDUCTORS and 4 TWISTED WIRES, the one i'm making uses 4 CONDUCTORS (maximum the RJ11 can have) and it has 2 TWISTED WIRES, now this is just like the category five, but like what u sed, cat.5 has 2 different signals, BUT, with more wires, it holds more information. That's why, do u think, making what i thought of will work?? It has more wires, so i think it will. I heard, the more wires, and the more shielded, the better. Oh yah, it is a RJ11, so it uses 1 signal!!

The double wire theory is like this.. With 2 wires, you get less resistance to your signal because you have a bigger pipe to shoot the data through. The problem is, this only improves your connection if the noise etc is coming from your house to the box. I do have mine like you say just in case. Next, call the phone company and tell them that on VOICE Calls you have been hearing static. Tell them it comes and goes, but is very anoying. A friend told me to do this. I did it, and they came and checked the lines trying to find my "intermittent" problem. They found that about half way from my house to the phone co.. ( thats a long way, probably helped some other folks out too.. )that there was a bad line. My connections went from 33600 to 50667 every time. I couldn't beleive it! It is worth a shot anyway! Since the noise was in their section, there was no charge to me!

Cat5 has 4 pairs of wires, but only 2 pairs are used in ethernet or fast ethernet, and in fact you can run only 4 wires (2 pairs) without a problem of any kind. You can even use the other 2 pairs as phone wiring for up to 2 phone lines if you feel like it.

In your modem, only 1 pair, or 2 wires, will be used, so adding more wires does nothing to improve the signal.

And, in ethernet, each signal is NOT sent on 2 lines. The reason there is 1 pair for send and 1 for receiving is that it reduces noise to pair wires and use a diff amp on the other side. So one signal uses 2 lines, but the signal itself is the voltage difference on the lines.

In fact there is so low resistance on copper wire that the increase in volume (well, technically increase in surface area as must charges ravel on the surface) by sending a signal twice is negligable.

Also, you can readily buy phone cable with all 4 wires run on it. Just as in Cat5 with 8 wires, the extras do next to nothing, I guess they reduce the capacitive coupling of lines to a minimal extent, but they don't do much, to the best of my knowledge.

i have 2 lines, the 2nd is what i'm using, and that's it. It's not connected to anything else.. the plan is this: from the jack, it will lead to my modem, i am not going to rewire the whole house.

Are you planning on rewiring the phone line from your modem all the way to the phone box outside? the line will only be as strong as its weakest link.
