I recently had to replace a hard drive due to failure. With the new drive installed, I can only access 16 colors. I would like to view at least 256 colors as before. All other hardware is unchanged. My motherboard is a PCChips M571 with onboard video and sound. I think my chipset is a SiS 5597/5598. I have downloaded and installed 1.08e and 4.0 SiS drivers. When I restart with 256 colors I have multiple screens overlayed, impossible to read.

Hi!
Looks like you're exceeding your monitor's sync range. Try a lower resolution or refresh rate. 640x480 at 60 Hz, with any color depth, should give a picture on any monitor. Go up in small steps from there.

Sounds like a bad/incorrect driver. Here's the webpage for your motherboard.
pcchips.com/m571.html (http://pcchips.com/m571.html)
There's a separate driver for Windows 98 & 95.
pcchips.com/m571vga.html (http://pcchips.com/m571vga.html)
The site is slow, so be patience. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Also, check your display properties. Use either the card default refresh rate or force it at 60. What kind of monitor do you have?
Lately, I've been hearing that people who email questions to PCCHIPS did not get any response. Try ask both the support & engineer.

i'm running the same chip on a generic mobo
from taiwan. go into control panel. click on
display, then settings. Here are mine:
mfg SIS, chip type 5597 REV 65, DAC type int-
ernal, memory 2mb, features direct draw, software version 4.0, current files sis597.drv,*vddsismini.xvd,ddsis32.dll
refresh rate optimal. once into settings my
board will accept an update in the color pal-
ette block to 256, but i like running at 16
bit high color. i dowloaded this driver at
www.sis.com.tw/ about 5 months ago.

I took craig722 advice and downloaded drivers from www:sis.com I configured all my settings to match his. I now have 16 bit True Color but when I change to 256 colors (to accomidate some games I have)
the display goes haywire again.

Hi!
You might want to try again, using the release 1.13 drivers that have
just surfaced on www.sis.com.tw.

This really sounds like your screen refresh rates exceed what your monitor can do. Check your monitor type setting! Put it back to Plug&Play Monitor if it is one, or pick the appropriate monitor type from the list.
