I know that phone lines, type of modem, ect all have a direct effect on speed but this perticular computer that my father in law has will not connect at no more than 24000.I have tried two types being a pci us robotics 56kmodem and a isa regular 33.6 that I know will connect at 33 because I had it in another computer. The phone lines will connect to aol on another computer at the same jack on an older computer at 38k so I feel that its something in this perticular computer but dont know where to go from here. The computer is a hp 300mhz and has the now often used shared ram on video.Dont know if this would be the problem but it has 64 meg and plenty of room left on the hard drive.any ideas on this one as I have out guessed myself on this one.mike

I know what you mean! I have delt with a lot of Lucent 56K V.90 modems and can't get more that 24000 or 26400 out of them. ISA or PCI! My 28.8 Rockwell connects faster!! I tried everything, downloading the latest driver updates, updating firmware, tweakin with modem settings and even had my phone line tested. AOL 4.0 seems to miscalculate modem speeds! Netscape reports 42000 and sometimes 36000!
Go to my troubleshooting website and under PC troubleshooting I expain what you can do to crank your modem up to the max! (www.gowiththebest.com/techpro.htm)

Good Luck!
