Check here http://www.be.com/products/freebeos/beosdatasheet.html for info on BeOS.
A friend of mine installed it then uninstalled it the same day. He said he wasn't impressed with it (a bit stronger than that but ya get the picture).

Ya beat me to that one Sharpy! (BIOS) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I know I WILL be one of those downloading their release 5 for the x86 platform. It's free. And hey, I'm always will to try something new --within reason of course!

Well Sharpey it depends on what you look for in an OS. I seriously doubt he thoroughly evalutated BeOS in 1 day. If it had compatibility probs or the Xwindows didn't look "pretty" thats one thing. But if zzz is looking for long-term stability in a development intensive environment, I'm not sure even a hard core 24 hours is good enough to reveal that. ( course I doubt it looking at his post hehe http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif)

BeOS (and I was not aware of any relation between the name "BeOS" and the term "BIOS"), is a very compact OS that is very fast. Hardware support is very spotty, but if you have compatible hardware you will love it. It usually boots in less than 15 seconds and it is very stable. According to "The BeOS BIBLE" it was designed from the ground up as a multimedia, object oriented OS for the modern computing enviroment - it fact one of its touted strengths is that there are no 16bit legacy programs to support thereby making it all the faster. Multiple processor capabilities are another of its features.

I have BeOS 4.5 installed on this computer along with Win98 and Linux (right now using Linux) and between BeOS and Linux I prefer Linux only because of the greater amount of hardware support, applications, features, and games available for it.

But the truth be known - everything works in Windows - all my hardware. The alternatives still have a ways to go.

15 Seconds?!??! The last OS I booted in 15 seconds was DOS 3.3 (course I was notorious for having a 10k autoexec). (that's big BTW) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

He is not kidding. It boots extremly fast. I just hope version 5 has the much needed hardware support.

Hardware compatablity a problem...
hmmm...
well I am having probs with my hard ware right now, and I am using win98se.
I am seriously thinking of a new os, but I have to decide, I have a registered version of winnt, that I could try, but how much would I be giving up?
I wouldn't mind trying beos. LInux its a pain to set up and get it configured! I remember it tooke me and my friend 2 weeks to get his comp to barely work

Here is a kul trick in Beos

1. Hold the CTRL+ALT+SHIFT keys and click on the Be button on the deskbar.
2. You will see a previously hidden menu item called "Window Decor."
3. There are several options available to you there, you can make all of your windows look like the BeOS, Windows98, MacOS or the AmigaOS - Take your pick!
