Hi

http://www.hardwarecentral.com/hardwarecentral/reviews/1611/1/

It is a shame they haven't done any test again the FastTrack RAID card...

I hate to point this out - but I believe the author got the acronym wrong - RAID - redundant array of inexpensive disks - newtons telecom dictionary - 12th edition....

but then, perhaps someone coined RAID differently somewhere else.....

Other than that - you might also want to look at Promise technologies which has IDE RAID1 solutions - mirroring only.

additionally - I expect SCSI prices to come down as you can buy similar access speed on IDE now..... - their only hold on the market is the ability to string 7 devices or more on a cable where IDE is currently limited to 4 on a stock mobo....

food for thought.

No, reduntant array of Independant disks is correct, if you don't believe it, go to a raid controllers web site, like Mylex, for example. OK, took my own advice and now taking foot out of mouth, Adaptec, who have been in the Business for a while say inexpensive.

Actually, it can go either way, though I prefer Inexpensive (and tend to think that was how it was intended). My CompSCI prof believe it's Independant so I had to remember that's what he thought in order to get an A on his test. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Actually...

It's always been INEXPENSIVE, even way back to 1987 at first coinage:

D. A. Patterson, G. Gibson, and R. H. Katz “A Case for Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks (RAID)”, Report No. UCB/CSD 87/391, University of California, Berkeley, CA 1987.

But, I have heard both Inexpensive and Independent, and the industry considers the terms interchangeable...

Ok...MS calls it "inexpensive" also.

And ...Axel, The Promise FastTrack66 does mirroring and striping and a combination of the two ( Raid 0, 1 and 0+1 ), as well as jbod ( just a bunch of drives ) I have one myself and have been extremely impressed with it.
I am looking to add 2 more drives to the 2 I have on it now.

Ok, as long as M$ has said it, it must be true... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif Just kidding. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Seems to be either way: http://webopedia.internet.com/TERM/R/RAID.html

I don't care what the dictionary says.

Dr. Patterson, Dr. Gibson and Dr. Katz have the first and last say on what it stands for.

Besides, it does what it does no matter what I call it.

Well, on the case for "inexpensive" all I can say is that when these drives are put into an array it seems to me that they work "together," as the term "array" loosely signifies.

So they are working independantly together - somewhat Zenish...
