Someone told me to always leave the max open, instead of using a fixed amout. Is this correct? If not, for gaming, what should I set my swap to? Thanks a bunch!

Thanks a bunch! Steve nimrod 05-06-1999, 06:20 PM If you have space on your hard disk use a fixed swap file, Min 128, max 128, unless you use huge files like an architect might use etc., this should be more than enough. socalgal 05-06-1999, 07:46 PM I had mine set at 120mgs min/max. Then tried 100mgs min/max. It "feels" better. There are lots of opinions on this subject and it depends what applications you are running, like nimrod said. I like to optimize my hdd, putting the swap on the outer edge of the disk. It feels "neater" to me. Another says this doesn't matter anymore. I guess you just go with what you like personally. If you are going to do that, might as well tweak your vcache. steveakaflash 05-06-1999, 10:37 PM V-cache, ive never dabbled with it b4. Is it important? Where is it? Does it make a big difference? Thanks all!! Steve socalgal 05-06-1999, 11:28 PM steveakaflash ~ here's an site that I used awhile ago. Thanks to Bleeding Edge, I now have the bookmark again! Yes! http://epsilon.silicon.net.my/adrian/ Rickee 05-07-1999, 10:54 AM Socalgal, There is some truth to what you are saying about keeping the swap in the outeredge. Remember, that's where the disk spins the fastest. My question, though, is how to put it in the outeredge in the first place? Rickee 05-07-1999, 01:22 PM Thank You! Your wisdom is most appreciated. Helly Hansen 05-07-1999, 09:04 PM Hey Guy, It's really up to you but I would let Windows manage it, leave it opened unless you disk performance really sucks! You just might have to defrag more often. I read an article about setting the Virtual memory to a fixed amout for greater performance but it's a bunch of ****! I have tried it! I have 200 and somthing megs of 100MHz RAM in my system. I tried several fixed amounts and all times the system was slowed somewhat! I have even ran benchmarks to prove my theory! Trust me! I am always tring to get more speed out of my system! Hope This Helps! Brandon Sandifer www.gowiththebest.com socalgal 05-08-1999, 12:31 AM Rickee ~ I use NU3's Speed Disk. If you can't get hold of the cd, then go to www.symantec.com/region/in/trialware/index.html (http://www.symantec.com/region/in/trialware/index.html) There's a 4.0 standalone version there. Remember this only works with a fixed swap. [This message has been edited by socalgal (edited 05-07-99).] gradius 05-09-1999, 09:55 PM Socalgal, I checked out your symantec link. Is there no Win95/98 version of speed disk? socalgal 05-09-1999, 10:15 PM hey sorry about that gradius, I didn't look very closely, did I? Well, looks like if you really want that Speed Disk, you will have to download the 38.6mg Norton Utilities. That's what I did originally, took about 3 hours with a 33.6k modem... or find someone with a cd (borrowed this time from work w/permission) or buy/return from a store... SysOpt.com
