I'm wanting to get into the world of video editing. It seems a lot of fun, so I thought I'd look into getting some equipment. I've got the guts for the computer- A T-bird 900 and lots o' RAM and HD space- but I can't really tell about the capture card. I really need some advice.
At least for now I'd like to spend under $120. Then, once I can tell if this is something I want to pursue more, I'll lay out some more cash for better stuff.

You could get a Voodoo3 or GeForce2 mx. With a VoodooTV 100 or 200. it will run you about $140. Or if your not very intrested in games. You could get a TNT2 and the voodooTV. That will run you about $100.
ATI cards do have allot of features. but are rather pricy if you want any preformance. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
Any other suggestions!

I just bought a new ATI All In Wonder 128 16 meg video card with cables and software on Ebay for $60.00. Only thing missing was the retail box. Retail price I think is around $150.00. Its got video capture and editing, TV, DVD and CD audio. I have it installed on my system and very happy with it.
Any other recommendations?

I also have a ATI AIW 128 16meg card for a week now and I have to say it sucks. There's no digital capture input and theres basically no real driver support for Win2k. Stay away from it. I think you probably want a capture card with firewire inputs atleast.

If you really want to do True Video Editing
or Capturing..."It's Gonna Cost You"...I've
checked out most of the under $300.00 cards
and the best you can hope for is fairly
stable 352X480...I'm still looking for one
that will give a solid performance at 640X480
or better for under $1,000.00..I'm not very
impressed with ATI..I use the 128 Rage Fury
32mb AGP2X and frankly it stinks...Go to http://www.miro.com They are one of the best

What kind of capturing are you wanting to do? For basics, the Hauppage WinTV 401 is a good card. With your cpu speed, your better off using software codecs than being limited to a hardware based card. Basicaly, give me a little more info on what you want to capture, and I'll tell you what you need to do it. Things like do you want to capture tv, or are you editing tape? I'll try to link to an image of one of my captures below.

For tv video editing, I would suggest getting the Pinnacle pctv Pro. I have it and am very happy. I've recorded over 25 music videos so far. Excellent quality! Retails for 70-80.

Or if you want to just play around and not have to spend money, you can use SnagIt32 to capture video in AVI format. It's nowhere near harware MPEG encoder, but does the job quite nicely. Faster the Processor, the better the results will be. I tried it on my Dual P3 @896 and it works quite well. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
