Within the realm of IDE drives's, which is absolutely the fastest? I consider speed more important than size. I can use a second drive for mass storage. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks!

Hi...

I think I have said that thousands of times:
IBM are the best HDD in the EIDE series (and probably in SCSI series too). Check out the deskstar series.
For speed, you have to consider only the HD which spin at 7200rpm.
After IBM, I would choose Maxtor, not bad at all.

You might want to try Seagate's Cheetah, which spins at 10,000 rpm. But you'll definitely need a HDD cooler. It'll fry your system if it doesn't have one.

Ctswiz,

I think that MikeG specified IDE drives, not SCSI.

Thanks for those replies. I read a review recently that stated that Maxtors 5400 rpm was a faster drive than IBM's 7200 because of the read/write methods used. I think I've read too much, that's why I was looking for info from experienced users.

Its a shame that HD makers don't spend as much time improving their speed as they do increasing their capacity.

HD manufacturers are concerned with speed and capacity.
For ex: IBM has released the DJN series with UDMA 66.
They are almost as fast as their brothers SCSI-2.

Hi all,

I know that WD doesn't seem to be a favourite to some but I had never had any much problems with these drives whatsoever. As a result, I would peg the WD 7200 rpm drives as being the fastest EIDE. With 2MB cache and 7200 rpm, it has the edge in most HD categories.

See http://www.storagereview.com/ for a complete breakdown.

I have been using some WD wihtout any problems, but still, IBM are probably the best HD.
They do have 2Mb cache - 7200rpm HD: the GXP series, with 22Gb capacity !!!

Out of IDE/ATA drives it would have to be IBM's new UDMA/66 drives or the Western Digital Expert Family, IBM designs the Expert Drives and Western Digital manufactures them. (7200RPM, 2MB Buffer, 7.5MS Seek) They are also really quiet and reliable!!
