I am trying to install a new ATI video card into my PCI slots on a compaq with onboard video.
I am having problems when i go to my BIOS and then i am not sure what to change. I do not see anything to change the primary display to PCI.
I have tried to disable the 810 Intel video graphics adaptor in the device manager, shut down then install the new PCI card, but my monitoor will not turn on.
I have checked out the compaq and intel forums before coming here, but nothing helped.
Can somebody please help me out?

http://web14.compaq.com/falco/detail.asp?FAQnum=FAQ3278 is the closest to what you are looking for i think???? Kinda miffed at them...what else is new...they recently cleared out there user forums http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif so there isnt much in there. Compaq will claim some pretty oddball things so for most of your help go to ATI.
Im am going by memory on this next part but >AFTER< I got my PCI video working on my old Presario I then went into system devices and disabled the agp controller since I had onboard AGP.It seemed to perk up the performance of the "Third Party Grapics Card"<<Compaq seems to refer to all video card issues by this.
By all rights your video should work simply by adding the card and attaching it to your monitor but Compaqs can be fickle beasts. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

Ohh and you "should" get best results using the topmost PCI slot.
btw there's also this depresing one http://web14.compaq.com/falco/detail.asp?FAQnum=FAQ547
Its not specific to your model but it is a typical responce. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/redface.gif

First, in order to upgrade your video adapter, you would need to change your current video adapter to VGA:
Left-click Start.
Left-click Settings.
Left-click Control Panel.
Double-click Display.
Left-click the Settings tab.
Left-click Advanced.
Left-click the Adapter tab.
Left-click Change.
Go through the wizard and choose (Standard display types) as the Manufacturer and Standard Display Adapter (VGA) as the Model.
After that, shutdown the system and power it off. Then strap on a good ESD wrist band (Electrostatic Discharge Wrist Band) and properly ground yourself and install the new PCI graphics card into a PCI slot (not the COMBO slot), in fact go for the highest PCI slot from the bottom of your case. After making sure that it is in its slot properly, boot up your system and have the driver disk for the new card ready so that the first chance you get once you boot the system you can insert it, however, in some cases, Diamond in particular, on some of there cards, you should just cancel when prompted for drivers for the card and when you get into windows, run the install program on the disk and it will install all that is necessary. This is the way it is with the Stealth S540 for instance. Otherwise, first chance you get, go to the manufacturers website and get the latest drivers available for the card. After doing that, go into device manager and make sure that you don't have a new device category that says other with question marks.
If needs be, follow these procedures to solve this issue if the previous steps couldn't disable the original video adapter.
Right-click My Computer.
Left-click Properties.
Left-click the Device Manager tab.
Double-click Display Adapters.
Double-click your original video card.
At the bottom of the general tab, there will be a box that says "Disable in this hardware profile".
Put a check in this box.
Left-click OK.
Left-click Close.
EDIT: Personal note Curtis A seems ok dont trust that Derrick guy http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

5714 is my model#. I have upgarded the ram to 128mb, and removed the dial-up modem and the home networking modem that was installed in the PCI slots that my PC came with.
For toroubleshooting I reinstalled one of the original modems, just to make sure my mobo was goo..and windows reconized it without a prob.
I am using a USB cable modem now, so those PCI slots are all empty except for the slot that i would like to install my new ATI video card. I have tried the card in all 3 PCI slots...no difference noticed.

I have tried all of the above steps, still no luck. I even so far as to exchange my card for another one, thinking the first one was bad.
Any other suggestions?

After scopeing out all the Compaq posts voodoo3 pci seems to be the one card that has had unanimous success. Check it out for yourself just to be sure cause now that I am writing this I cant put a sure thumb on the model but i think it is voodoo2 3000 pci.

I also have the AIW 128, it will work fine if you don't disable your inboard adapter in the device manager. Its not a permanent fix but it works for me.

As someone else stated, try just installing the PCI card without disabling the on-board AGP video. If I recall, Win 98 will normally set the PCI card as primary.
