17inch didn't impress me all that much I was bit disappointed thought because it seem kind of weak compared to my 15inch where it was much much brighter and was more defined.
the 17' had a limitation on brightness, the 15' didn't it was beyond bright bright and really sharp. both are .28 pitch but anyway I bought another 17' with .27 and the quality was much worst then this, so I return it. anyway the 15' and 17' I bought are same brand name so it had nothing to do with being crappy brand. anyway higher resolution tend to be worst for you eye because you have to read smaller text especially at 1280x1024 on a 15' monitor.
for 15' I think 800x600 is good, for 17' 1024 or 800

Try shopping at a different store with different brands...

1024x800 is OK on a 15" if you use Large Fonts (as I do at work cuz they only gave me a 15" monitor)- anything higher is too small.

There are only three reasons I can think of to get 15" monitors any more:

1 You have to buy hundreds of 'em and you arn't the one who will actually use one.
2 It was free.
3 You have VERY limited desk space.
