Hey guys,

Im running a Viper II on a k6-2 500 with 196MB of Ram. I get decent framerates in q3 (around 68 with a medium level of tweaking), but in games like CounterStrike I get an average of 30? I find this unacceptable.

The only thing I can come up with is that my processor is severly limiting my performance(duh). The question is, what should I upgrade to? And just how large an increase should I expect to see? I plan on sticking with AMD, but should I go Duron or TBird? Also, what motherboards are the best?

Thanks,

Atlas

The abit and Asus boards are the best. They will shoot you way up in terms of fps. I can only relate interms of 3DMark scores but in my K6-3 450 I was getting around 1500 on 3DMark while my Celeron 566 got around 3500 with the same setup. You should be up higher than that with a Duron or T-bird.

My friend is having the same problem, Q3 runs decent with tweaking, but Half-life/TFC/CounterStrike absolutely suck. He has a K6-2 400 with a Voodoo5 5500 (he thought the video card would take care of everything) and I told him to get a Duron/T-Bird with an Abit KT7 or Asus A7V motherboard. I would suggest the same for you. Expect to pay about $250 for a Duron setup.
