I have to build a computer for a woman at my brother's work, which should have a 600MHz AMD Athlon. The only thing is that my brother is arguing to me that I should charge more by buying a 700MHz Athlon instead and put the 600 in. I ask him why and all he says is he can oc it faster. Is that a good reason? I didn't think so and I argued with him for fifteen minutes and he had to make me extremely upset about it. What do you think about it?

Tell your brother to take a hike. Your rep is on the line here, so do what you feel best. If he is a loving brother, he should support you!

Tell your bro to build his own systems and cheat his own customers. Obviously you tangluva have a little more class than your sibling.

If she wants a 600, then build her a 600, and use a 600mhz CPU. If you think she might be interested, you can always explain the theory of overclocking and for a few extra bucks you can bump her system up to 700 or 750. And don't forget that overclocking an Athlon requires an o/c gizmo @ about $40-$50.

Best advice is to keep in touch with her because in 6-8 months she'll be asking you "Now what were saying about overclocking?".

Thanx for all of your input. I hope my brother sees this and sees what he is doing is wrong.

Before you o/c a customer's (or even a friend's) machine, keep in mind that o/c'ing affects the stability & reliability, thus increasing the likelyhood of tech support.
And once it's done, they're dissatisfied if it has to be backed down later.

If you're to be that support, why ask for problems? A good, solid machine equals a happy owner & leads to referals.

Invite your brother for a nice long hike...and while he has his back turned to you admireing the beautiful scenery take a large stick, and bludgeon him several times in the head until he dies.
That should fix the problems with your brother.

A simple letter to the lady should cure your problems.
Miss*****, please be advised. I know that you had ask for me to build you a 600 mhz machine. but, my brother be as he is. has instructed me to put you in a 600 and charge you for a 700 mhz cpu. "which will cost you more"so that he might overclock it for you. I have no problem doing this. if you will only give me a letter from you. stateing you have talked it over with my brother and he has warned you of the effects of overclocking a cpu and the damage it might cause you and the likelyhood of system crashes .and he will cover the extra cost of the chip and the cost later on down the line when the chip burns up or you have to repay me to come and refix your system from the overclocking of it. even tho we are brothers. I myself don't like to make money off of something or give a custmer something they don't need or want or understand. if you feel the need yourself for a larger chip. I'll abide by your request. other wise I think you should take the money and use it for something more needed like memory or harddrive space. I'll be wait for a reply from you after you have talked this over with my brother. or if you need more info please go to this site and let me know what you think. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/005054.html
I look forward to being able to be at your service now and after the sale of the system.

thanks tangluva

600 mhz is good enough to run about anything. So tell your brother to take his 700mhz amd althon and throw it in the microwave set the bus speed to as high as it goes set the microwave for 10 minutes and he should have it overclocked in no time
