I got two new 7200 Maxtors. A 27.2gb and a 13.6gb. The 13gb unit says "IBM Warranty" IBM p/n 09n0714, IBM FRU 371-5719, mfg 03-Feb 2000. Model #91366u4. Also my IBM 475/K6 unit has a 13.? IBM HD and Both are super quiet... any thoughts on who is making these. Sorta makes me think of the Antifreeze and Battery deal(one mfg making them all).. later DrVette

Another thought...how many HD makers are there REALLY out there....I figure Maxtor makes almost ALL of the IBM drives...I mean...you don't really believe IBM actually MAKES anything do you?..

Why are the IBM drives so much better then? That's the only thing that doesn't make sense.

lets say that we are on a car lot.
now, this peticular car lot carries one specfic corporation.
and in front of you is a car for 10k.
its brand-new from factory but may have components not up to satisfaction like the car next to it for 20k brand-new from factory ...with a longer warranty.
they are pretty much the same car.... execpt for minor engine adj..etc and the logo of a different subsidary... like chev vs cadlliac...
I too have a maxtor 13.6gb 7200rpm U4 drive...runs great.... quiet as can be... the wd 6.4gb 5400rpm U2 drive i have, is daisy-chained with it.it is a little noiser than the 13.6gb drive but they both have been no problems whatsoever as of yet..... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

All an IBM part number means is the drive was originally intended for an IBM system, or as IBM spares. But that is an odd looking FRU number, they normally look like the part number.
IBM don't manufacture Maxtor, WD, or Quantum drives. But they are all available with IBM part numbers and FRU numbers, although they normally cost more.

My 2 7200RPM Mactors - 27.3GB and a 20GB Diamond Max plus don't have any strange markings on them, but a 10.2Maxtor I have has a Hewlett-Packard sticker on it! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Im almost 100% sure that newer WD drives are made by IBM. Thier proformance scores are neck and neck with IBM, so i put the two on par when i recommend HDD's. I think the ATA/66 review at www.anandtech.com (http://www.anandtech.com) helps shed some light on this.

Maxtor does not make IBM HDDs,I am quite certain of this..........IMB does not make western digital HDDs either......IBM does however sell(or they just license)western digital thier internal HDD parts(design) to western digital...that is why western digital HDDs are so much better then they were.

It's true that IBM doesn't make their own hard drives, they are manufactured outside of the company and bought in and badged. I'm not sure who makes them, I always used to think it was Conner but I really don't know anymore.

I know that IBM develops thier own HDD technology....maybe they just make the parts and contract someone to assemble them.....
IBM is always raising the bar in IDE technology.

Speaking of raising the technology bar, Here's a link to the IBM microdrive HD, maybe someone here has NOT seen it. http://members.home.net/s.julien/futuretechtoday.html and at IBM's site there is a new camera with 3.3megapixel that uses this drive http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/diskdrdl/micro/index.htm , $450.00 for a 340mb HD is steep, but when it fits in a camera,, KEWL,, DrVette

As far as I know, Maxtor makes HD for IBM PC lines, and IBM provides warranty for the drives they sell... just like Dell and other PC manuf. they don't make HD.

There are lots of things that are labled by company "A" but manufactured by comapny "B" who also manufactures for companies "C" "D" "E" etc.
IBM would have min specs that all parts have to meet. If the part does not meet those specs there maybe another company that has lower specs that the part will meet.
There is a lot of that going on in all types of business.
