I am trying to build or buy a computer to run linux(mandrake 7.0) on. I already have a souped up system I use so great performance isn't the main goal. I mainly just want a computer that can be a full time linux box to learn on and be the firewall for my home network. I have about $400 to spend on it.(I am going to use a KVW and use my existing monitor, mouse and keyboard). What would you suggest? I am thinking maybe an older used system or possibly building one from scratch using cheap parts.
Hello,
An older used system will do. 166 and above.
Good luck!

Have you heard of VNC? http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/index.html
I use that to control my Linux boxes through the network. A 100mbps network is HIGHLY recommended though.
If you use it, I'd recommend a CPU with more juice, and regardless, go with at least 64MB RAM. Using X in 32MB RAM is about as fun as using Windows 98 in 32MB RAM.
If you're going to build from scratch, a K6-2/3 CPU would probably be an excellent one to build from due to their price and performance.
