i did this with the hercules mx, other brands may be the same. there are 4 holes directly behind the heatsink. i took two screws slightly thicker than the holes and put them in caddy corner. i took turns tightening between the screws and in seconds the hs just fell off.

Why would you do that?

Maybe to put a bigger heatsink on it?

tcul72,soundslike a good way to get it off.It takes a lot of courage to take a heatsink off a videocard (especially the first time).I haven't taken off the hs of my ATi Rage Fury 128GL yet,but I will. There's always the risk it goes wrong, and you have to buy a new card.btw, how did you get the new heatsink on?

Thanks for the info, looks like I have to get that Artic Silver stuff, too. But I live in the Netherlands.Hope that isn't going to be a problem.I think I'll put a small Pentium heatsink on it.I already have an extra high 5cm 6500rpm fan.I am using it right now on it,but it has a very small heatsink on it.Not that it will get much faster with overclocking than it is now,but I would like to get everything out of it.I think I'll put heatsinks on the memory as well (32mb).

yeah be VERY careful when taking off that heatsink, i busted my voodoo3 2000 doing that. ripped some capacitors and resistors off http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. i just bought a new geforce mx and i already took the heatsink off that http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif.

question: do you have to use a special thermal epoxy to fix the heatsink to the video card? or is any old epoxy ok?

there is heat conductive epoxy made for attaching heatsinks. regular epoxy probably wouldn't be a good idea as it could very well trap the heat.

i got the fan/hs combo from 2cooltech. to mount it, it came with adhesive thermal tape, but i sanded that off, and put arctic silver paste on the chip(all except the four corners) i used epoxy on the four corners and pushed the hs on. works like a charm http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

i'm also gonna mount a hs/fan combo on the memory chips of my card.
