Hi everyone, I have an ISO file question. How do these work? From what I understand, you burn .ISO files to CD, but how do you execute the program off of the CD? I'm downloading Mandrake7 as an ISO file and I'm not sure how to get it running, (I'm d/ling it from Bdogs site actually). Thanks http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I don't know exactly how it works, but I downloaded Corel Linux that way. When I used Adaptec Easy CD Creator to burn the ISO file to the disk, it wrote it in normal file format. In ISO format it's one file, but on the disk it's looks normal. Must decompress it or something. All you should have to do is boot from your CD-ROM or a boot disk and start installing.

ISO files contain complete information about a CD and let CDR(W) to "burn" an exact copy of the master disk. It creats files and directory structure, so the cd can be accessed as usually, for example through Explorer. Speaking of Mandrake, the CD is most likely bootable. If you have a more or less modern CD-ROM drive, you should be able to boot from it. Put the created CD in, restart comp, go to BIOS setup and set it to boot from CD-ROM. It will start Mandrake install automatically.
Hope this helps.
Hi, Dan. The Mandrake ISO is bootable. If your system doesn't support bootable cd's you can use rawrite which is on the mandrake cd(from within windows) To create a boot floopy for the mandrake install.
Just curious Dan, How fast did it download? I assume you are on cable or dsl. I am on 56k so I can't really judge the servers performance. It gets really slow sometimes because they recently wired up the dorms on campus for ethernet connections. I don't think the had enough bandwidth to do it right.

Well, I used Easy CD Creater and copied the ISO file to the CD. Now I have the single ISO file on the disk, but I can't do anything with it. Where did I go wrong? Thanks!

LOL When you first open up EZ CD creator you will need to hit FILE and then chose "create CD from CD image" that will open up a new box and from there you will choose "ISO" format and choose which iso file to burn http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
What you did was burn the actual file instead of burning in a ISO format http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Bdog, it started off at about 21.00, then it went up to about 41.00, and it levelled off at around 30.00, it took a few hours to download even with cable. Nice job with the choice of programs!
