Hmmmm... No problems here with free retail win2k, never registered. What message do you get before it reboots? Also, IIRC M$ have free support for the first few months, so if this is legal copy, you may look up the phone number in the manual and demand some explanation from them.

MS has free support but you have to pay the LD charges for the 1st 90 days after registration of Legal MS software.

If you cant find anything on the web give them a call.

it says that all i have to do is to reinstall or upgrade my copy of win2k to a full retail version of it
and that it will work if i do so

it sounds like you got ahold of a "evaluation copy" instead of the "real thing" The Evaluation automatically expires after a set amount of time. (kinda like shareware) You could continue to run your current copy (if you dont mind rebooting every hour) or you can buy and install the "real thing" and have it running all the time http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Yes it is an eval copy. It expires after 120 days. Something like this http://contact.microsoft.co.uk/windows2000/freetrial.asp , of course this is their UK site but they gave out copies for ecal purpose and you got one.

One way around this would be to get a CD-KEY from someone, I guess. But then again that is not a legal method.

I installed an evaluation version 3 days ago on an Athlon, and today it restarts every hour.

Maybe it was something to do with me messing with the date to get H-Oda's Athlon L2 Ccache program working.

Yep....There is an EMBEDDED date in some of the eval copies that is set to "time-bomb" once a certain date has past. Thus if you were to do a "new" install of that copy of win2K today it will imediately start to do the 1 hour reboots (as you have gone past the date that is in the software) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif or in your instance http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

why would you be surprised that a pirated copy would expire, the copies that ciculated on the net had a 120 day expiration from the date that copy was released, coded into the SETUPREG.HIV file, judging by this you have had this copy installed well before the official release. your only option is to format and set your bios clock two years ahead, i understand that will work, and by then you will be ready to install your pirated copy of whistler http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
