I thought that my ASUS 6800 64 meg video card would give an edge in performance, yet I read on the ASUS tech line that some games actually don't recognize 64 meg(as opposed to 32) and crash. Is this true?

I have a Elsa Gladiac 64mb (GeForce2 GTS) and I have never experienced a crash on any games with this card.

As for the memory issue, you will not notice much of a performace difference between a 32mb model and a 64mb model (mabye 9 FPS or so) because most games don't require more than 32mb of Video RAM to run well.

As we start to see games with more and larger textures, the performance gap should widen between the 32mb and 64mb models.

But for right now, 32mb is plenty. I got the 64mb version because I do not plan to upgrade my video card for at least a year or so. (Besides the fact that I strive for the best performace I can possibly have!)

Hope that helps!

I think the person who told you this information is a non-gamer who misinterpreted a reported bug with DiabloII. When initially released, this game would have really excessive load and exit times, sometimes followed up with an applications crash (which was a different issue). Blizzard discovered it was a bug in the D3D renderer. It had a problem with the video memory caching algorythm when a 64mb card was used. Patch v1.03 has since fixed this. As far as I know, this is the only known instance of having too much video RAM exposing a problem. In any event, it was the game and not the video card at fault.

For a real performance increase you should have 256mb ram memory (It's best that your ram memory is 4x the AGP memory). With 128mb,your computer will only use 32mb of the videocard. With 128mb memory your computer can't process enough data to fill the 64mb memory of your videocard, and can't be used optimum.
