Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : which email client do you use?

For some reason I have been trying out various email clients lately. I have tried Outlook express, Netscape Communicator, and Eudora light. I like OE's features the best, but it kinda scares me that the majority of the viruses out there are designed to exploit it. Anyone have another client that they have tried and like?

I use Outlook (full blown Office 2k version) as I love the contact manager/appointment tracker ect ect. (also interfaces with my palm pilot when used with a program called pocket mirror. I'm just very careful to scan any attachments and just dump those that I wasn't expecting.

I use Netscape, The main reason being that it is so so much easier to upgrade or do a fresh install & keep all your mail & settings. All you have to do is backup your users file & replace it before you reinstall netcape(in the same directory & use the same username).

With Outlook etc. you have to find the correct pst. file & even then things don't always go smoothly. It can depend on what upgrade path you took to get there.

The one thing that does annoy me with Netscape is that you can only specify one email address per user. If you have more than one email address then i would look elsewhere. Outlook is much better in this way.

Being able to backup & restore simply, is very imorant to me. For me this is reason enough to stick with Netscape.

Krusty.

Outlook is cool. Netscape can do multiple email addresses, you just set them up in profile manager and you have to shut down/reopen netscape for each email address. Pain in the rear.

I'm currently using Outlook Express 5, since Outlook 98 is overkill for me. Has anyone here used The Bat (http://www.ritlabs.com/the_bat/) before?

I'm using Eudora Pro 4.2... it's by far the easiest to do a reinstall and not lose your mail. Copy the program dir to a zip or a CD and that's it because it doesn't have any DLLs or anything in the system directory! I have even run it off a zip disk in the past (tooo sloooow!)

I started using Calypso when Netscape Mail began giving me some troubles and am very satisfied with it.

I fiddled with a few clients that I was able to try out from Winfiles, and decided on Calypso for it's ease of use and customization. Their customer support is excellent and will respond by the next day, too.

I too am an Outlook 2000 user. It is a great product. The only beef I have is it doesn't have it's own newsreader, it defaults to Outlook Express for that.

I use Outlook Express at home...

I have all my E_mail accounts in the same profile (wyvrn Why would you have to shut anything down to check diff accounts? I don't...)

I use Outlook at work just because we have a 3000 user exchange server system up. Oh, you can have access to multiple user mailboxes in Outlook at the same time also.

I like Express better because of it's multimedia support along with being interconnected with all other apps. Makes things very easy!

I never lost an e-mail yet, very easy to save all mail and address books.

I think most people who have not used OE much just don't know how easy it can be to use, and how many benefits they can get out of it.

Then you are superior to me in every way. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Maybe cause I have not used Netscape in a few versions, I might have missed that feature. I use Outlook or Express exclusivley now.

Depends on the OS - Windows=OE (no problems), Linux =kmail (like it a lot)

I need a system where all settings are on a different partition than my c:\ drive. Thus I always go for software that has a clear and logical "data independence" (that is the program separate its data from its program files). I cannot fully express my anger towards Microsoft for their unbelievably poor handling and implementation of data independence. It is a problem with ALL their products that data and program files are mixed. If you sit down and try to move all your data to a custom location you've got weeks of work ahead of you before you can be sure that all settings are stored separately from all program files.

Well enough said about that. I've tried all major email clients: Netscape, Outlook & Outlook Express, Eudora, Mail On net etc.. (you name it). There is no doubt in my mind that Eudora is by far the most logical program to use, and it also has the best "data independence". The filtering features are very powerful, but somewhat hard to use. There are some annoying display bugs in Eudora, but overall it is the best product. Outlook is good, but it doesn't have the same level of data indepencence as Eudora, and it uses (of course) a proprietary Microsoft storage format whereas Eudora uses the standard UNIX format for the mailboxes (as far as I know).

Eudora is the best.

Was thinking of trying Eudora, guess now would be the time. It is free right ?

wyvrn: Yes in principle it is free. There are several different options:

1: You use a "light version" which is completely free (light mode)
2: You use the complete version for free as long as you accept to have "ads" popping up in a small window (sponsored mode).
3: You pay for the package (about $49.95) and get all features without having to watch adds (paid mode)

i use OE5 usually, not the greatest, but it works, did nt loike netscape that much...and eudora was too much of a headache, plus i get sick of it at work (ISP tech support), seems like many of the real problems getting email come from eudora users.

then again the problem could be the NT mail servers and not eudora

well, i use OE 5 and i like it. i just never open attachments unless i already know what they are. that solves 99.9% of all e-mail virus problems.

the only think i don't like about OE is the darn ad bar at the bottom, but i may uninstall and go to an earlier version to get rid of it.

i hate eudora. that's all i have to say about it. and NS is just too boring and bland. (and not to mention a POS!)

well, back on topic. errr something... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I love Outlook97 because of using MSWord for the e-mail editor. Only problem is that you can only access one internet mail account with it. Bites, huh?

So, I use Outlook Express 5. It is quick and easy, I just wish Billy G would have seen the possibility of using multiple accounts with the full blown Outlook. Thanks again Billy G. As usual, you hit the nail on the head!

grandslammer,

Why don't you take Micro$oft up on the offer of a free upgrade to Outlook 98 from 97?

It can handle more than one e-mail account, I use it myself.
