Best way to control player in Half-Life?

I keep just about every action command on the left side of the keyboard (strafe, backwards, crouch, secondary fire, and all that). For the mouse i use moselook, and mouse 1 to fire. I use mouse2 for walking forward, which throws me out of the norm completely...Its just how I got used to it.

Every one I know just about uses mouse 2 to move forward............

I do about the same as everyone else, having left hand on keyboard and right hand on mouse. I use the arrow keys to move. I died so many times using a regular mouse with "balls" that I switched over to the Intellimouse Explorer.

Someone taught me my current setup and it works well. (Will prove to you in [KTL] Warzone - hehe)

Use mouse for most movement.
mouse1 movesforward
mouse2 movesback

"q" leftstrafe
"w" secondary fire
"e" rightstrafe
"r" is both jump and long jump (must alias for lj)
"space" primary fire

"a" tau
"s" 9mmAR
"d" rpg

"f" use

Try it - it really upped my ratio

If you haven't tried a trackball. You should give it a shot. I play all FPS with it and keyboard. A joystick just doesn't give you the precision of a mouse or trackball. You don't have to worry about falling off your pad. LOL!

Ahh, too late to learn a new config. I use a funky one: Slide the keyboard to the left about 6 inches. Use the up/down arrows for run and backpedal, left/right arrows for slewing, cntrl for crouch, 10-key 0(insert) for jump, #1 key for special stuff.#4 key for grenade1. Mouse1 is fire weapon, mouse 2 is reload, mouse 2 is special prime grenade1.

Hey, I just got Half Life and am wondering what is the best controls for playing the game? I've always used a joystick with Dark Forces and all my other games. This game seems like you HAVE to use the mouse and keyboard simultaneously. But it's difficult as **** to move with the cursur keys, crouch with ctrl, jump with space bar and do all the other stuff with other keys all at the same time! I just wanted to know how the veteran players of this game have their controls set up. If they use a special mouse or whatever. Thanks for any input.

i use a wheel mouse and keyboard, and i customize all the keys that i use so i can use one hand to crouch and jump and move and so on...the mouse is to shoot and switch weapons as well as aim...just practice a LOT
i still am pretty bad at it in team play online, but great solo..

Just think of your right hand as your gun arm. You point your arm at your target and fire with mouse button1. Your left hand controls your body movement with arrow keys or ASDW, whichever u prefer. Reload or weapon switching can be assigned wherever you prefer. Crouch or jump keys should be assigned very close to your movement keys so they're easy to reach. Customize whatever way you prefer in HL, you can alwasy set it back to default keys.

I use the mouse to move and look.....I use mouse look......it is like when you want to look down you push the mouse forward,and pull
back to look up.......arcing left to right lets you lokk from side to side.....
Mouse 1 is my fire button,mouse 2 is my run forward button,and middle mouse I use to jump..........
Now with the other hand you can do the more advanced movements..........I use an ergonomic keyboard and I am right handed,so I place my left hand on the left side of the keyboard,and I bind they keys where they feel most natural to use them

This is my config........c=backpedal/x=stepright/z=stepleft/alt=crouch/f=alternate fire

That is my config,and it works well for me..
you just can not beat a mouses precision in aiming and movement.......once you get used to it,you will wonder how you ever played without using the mouse.

right mouse button jumps, 0/INS is crouch, ./del is use, enter is secondary attack, + is next weapon. That's all in the number pad area and all you need to play. Happy fragging.
