What do you think about running a Geforce DDR with just a heatsink, no fan? I have a 45mmX45mmX10mm heatsink made by Alpha and was wondering if I had good case ventilation, would that be enough to keep it cool? I had a TNT2 that came with just a heatsink and was clocked at the same MHz (120) as the GeForce. Right now I have a fan on it. Tell me what you think.

EDIT-I'm not overclocking the core, just the RAM.

Even if you have good case ventilation, what matters is if there is air actually circulating over the heatsink. Fans do this job well, and taking the fan off is kinda risky, I think.

Well...considering the miniscule amount of flow of the normal GeForce fan...a bigger heatsink alone would suffice.

You will have to remove the uneven layer of glue, on the chip, that holds the stock fan in place. I used Citrus solvent...worked very good, along with a light scraper tool with a wide scraping surface.

Are you running yours without a fan? If so, no problems? Thanks.

EDIT-What did you use to attach your new heatsink with? Thermal glue/tape?

Well it seems just a larger heat sink with thermal paste is all the GPU needs. I took the fan off and played UT for about a half hour and no problems.

I'd still put a fan near it. Not a 486 fan, mind you, but a big case fan.

Go here (http://home.earthlink.net/~chinmonster) and skip to the section called The BIG Fan and you'll see what I mean. Nothing outrageous though.
