I tried to set up Win98 multiple monitors last night on one of my PCs. The video card that was already there is a Matrox Mystique PCI (2Mb I think). When I installed the second card, a Trident 2Mb, the Matrox card had no display. Device manager showed both cards, but the Matrox card had a yellow ! and a message about the driver not being compatible with multiple monitors. I tried updated drivers from the Matrox website, and the message went away, but it still had the yellow !. It was getting pretty late, so I gave up for the night.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate hearing them. Here are some thoughts I have about what might be the problem:

• Is one or both of the cards definitely incompatible with multiple monitors, or could it just be a driver issue?
• Are there other drivers available, based on the chipset, not the card manufacturer?
• I read somewhere that if you use 2 Matrox cards, you have to disable VGA on one of them. How is this done?
• The mobo has 4 pci slots (no AGP). Could the PCI slots used have anything to do with this?

The motherboard is a Shuttle 555 or 557 (I'm not sure which - I'm not at home right now).

Thanks,

Steve

It might be an issue of the card itself not being compatable, but windows just recognizing the driver as incompatable. But for multimonitor to work you need to initiate the other vid card. (which everone has the blank screen) I think it is in display properties, but I don't know. I've never actaully done multimonitor before.

Thanks for the response. I believe you're right about the display properties. The problem is, that the Matrox card has a yellow ! in device manager, and therefore is disabled. If they are both enabled, the display properties should allow me to configure each of the monitors' properties.

I'm going to try another video card from one of my other systems when I get a chance.

Thanks again,

Steve

Success! I swapped out the Matrox card with an S3 Trio 64V+ card and I'm now looking at some pretty serious real estate. Now I have the browser window open on one screen and ICQ open on the other. It's going to be tough to go to work in the morning with only one monitor there... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
