Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : why is active desktop needed for Digital Blasphemy wallpapers??? zskillz 03-20-2000, 10:32 AM like the question said... and also, is there any way around that? thanks -Z Mntsnow 03-20-2000, 10:56 AM It's not....as long as your using a BMP as the wallpaper. If it's in GIF or JPG formats you have to enable the active desktop http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Many choose to use active desktop so they can use the other formats because they take up MUCH less disk space compaired to a bitmap picture. Mntsnow zskillz 03-20-2000, 11:12 AM thanks mntsnow... do you know where I could get more information about the active desktop? Here's the deal, the way i see it, running active desktop means that there is just one more thing running that could be eating up system resources, so if I can avoid that I will. In addition, with the price of memory these days, storage space is less of an issue, so i don't mind storing it as a BMP. I am however still interested in the differences in storage space needed to store the exact same pic in both bmp and jpg, so if you have any info on that, I'd aprecciate it. thanks Z (I didn't think that changing the extension would do it but it worked) [This message has been edited by zskillz (edited 03-20-2000).] mgordon99 03-20-2000, 01:29 PM When I use JPG's as wallpaper with active desktop, it really seems to slow my system down. Don't know why, anyone? Mntsnow 03-20-2000, 01:47 PM It's becuase of the way Active desktop works. Thats why most people choose not to use it. Mntsnow nk4 03-20-2000, 02:27 PM You actually need active desktop to use jpg for wallpaper?! I have been using a jpg wallpaper without active desktop. Just open up the jpg with netscape or interent explorer, right click on it and set as wallpaper. Does that automatically trigger active desktop? I would think I could notice if that happened, but I saw no change at all, either in performance or anything else. oxOGradiusOxo 03-20-2000, 02:39 PM [nk4] When you right click on an image in IE or Netscape and select "Set as Wallpaper" IE converts that image to a BMP, puts it in your windows directory (named Internet Explorer Wallpaper.bmp) and sets it as your default wallpaper. Mntsnow 03-20-2000, 02:58 PM Looks like Gradus beat me back to this thread http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Mntsnow OuTpaTienT 03-20-2000, 09:33 PM Help. I have a cool image I want to use as wallpaper, and I don't know why Windoze can't just use it the way it is. It was originally a YCbCr(YUV)-formated .TIFF file, then I converted it to a CCITT-RLE .TIFF using an encrypted form of LZW compression, I then saved it with an extention of .BMP because I know Windoze can read Bitmaps. But it fails to load it as my wallpaper. In fact, every time my cursor gets within 8-10 pixels of the filename, my systems locks up. What gives? . . . . . . . . . . . .btw.....j/k Mntsnow 03-21-2000, 12:33 AM Just as an example the pic that is my wallpaper (see other thread) in BMP format it's 2.9 MEGS in size and in JPG format it's 508 KB! (with NO compression and can be even smaller with compression but with compression comes a loss of clairity) a savings of over 2.4 MEGS in space. I just use BMP's as I have WAY TO MUCH storage space on my network so I dont worry about size of wallpapers http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Mntsnow [This message has been edited by Mntsnow (edited 03-20-2000).] SysOpt.com
