Not that I'm an ungreatfull sob who doesn't want to support EarthWeb (*cough*) but would you consider adding an option to turning off ads (though cookies) on the forum or thoughout the site? I the kind of person who closes pop-up windows as soon as they appear, and NEVER EVER click banner ads, so I think it would save your bandwidth and mine! if there was an option for not viewing them. Of course if you're going for impressions and not clicks(throughs) .. it's another story.

part of leaving them on is they do have some interesting links on them now and then, and if we follow them it helps keep this BB paid for,
so which do you prefer adverts or pay and enter,
JAT,
Scott, Joel or Socalgal can confirm if this is correct.

Sorry folks I am going to have to get a new K/board this one is starting to really suck.

I think of it this way:

If I were to take my computer to the shop everytime I got a problem I couldn't figure out, then I'd had enough to build myself a ten P3 system LAN. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I get all this information and help for free, from the SysOpt users. I "pay" them by helping others out in any way I can, and I help "pay" SysOpt by clicking on the banners and check out the sites.

I actually saw a few interesting links the other day for ThinkGeek.com. I checked out their site, and bought me 2 shirts and a Vortex foam gun. Pretty swanky too..
"stuff for smart masses" - heh heh, that's hilarious

Yea serge....it is called dont surf the web..

Seriously though if you want to turn off all ads.......you will have to go to your I.E. icon, right kilick it,go to advanced...scroll down to multimedia, then uncheck the box that
says "show pictures".....then uncheck the box that says "play animations".....then you will ot see any pictures or anything exept text....................
enjoy

But seriously if you do enjoy the forum what is looking at a few ads in the way of discomfort.....hell you should try to kilick on one of them at least once a day, just to show your support........

In a perfect world, there wouldn't be any advertising anywhere, but there would be very few free quality publications, believe me. Working on SysOpt is my fulltime job and I get paid to do it. Most jobs are paid http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif. If it didn't make any money, it wouldn't make sense for EarthWeb to pay me. Besides myself, there are a dozen contributors to this site that are compensated too.

So, if you like this site, putting up with a very small banner at the top of each page is pretty minor payment. Many sites have like 5 banners throughout the page as you scroll down, etc., so this isn't that bad. And most of these ads are fairly interesting these days: Redhat, Intel, Crucial, etc.

So to answer your question, no, there is no way to turn off the ads through our software. I have a question for you: would you be willing to subscribe to the site for some monthly fee in order to never see any banner ads? Somehow I doubt it.

Other sites out there that appear to be hobby sites with a few banner ads to pay the bills are generally making high six figure revenues and sometimes seven, btw, but running these sites isn't a cakewalk - they take a lot of time, skill, and expense.
