Here's some cheaper, but decent performing cards:

-Voodoo3 2000
-nVidia TNT-2
-GF-256 SDR
-S3 Viper2
-ATI Rage Pro

Many other exist, but performance can vary greatly. The cards listed above range from $60-130 US. They also have proven performance, and are all decently supported. For the latest prices, check out PriceWatch (http://www.pricewatch.com).

I personaly would go for a GF-256 SDR card, as it has good fill rates and many advanced options with latest 5.xx driver releases(s3tc, FSAA, hardwate T&L, etc.). Its use of standard SD-RAM does limit it performance as compared to DDR boards, but will ascale quite well upto 1024*768*32.

So if you haven't got the money to buy the newest 3d cards, what are reasonable cheap alternatives.
