I am attempting to get a new system running. it is:
ASUS K7v, 750 Athlon, 128MB Micron, Plexwriter 8/4/32, IBM 20.5 GB, 7200 HDD, Matrox G400 MAX.
All is well until I insert Matrox support CD into clean Win98SE install to load video drivers.

When Win98 restarts, goes to black screen with hourglass in middle. Power off/on gets to hourglass with green line at top.

system will boot to safe mode, and has G400 in video adapter properties. It just doesn't run it.

Matroxusers.com is down. (my ISP says that SNSA.Net as major router problems effecting many sites, including YAHOO) Matrox.com is also unavailable. Someone at MURC reported a similar problem, but I did not copy it out.

Has anyone worked through this combo to make it work? I do no know if it is MOBO related or Video related.

MOBO BIOS is 1003. ASUS site does not have any later revision.

This has been a frustrating weekend, hobby is not supposed to be this way.

I have an Asus K7V and a G400 Dual Max running under WinNT4. I didn't have any problems setting it up at all. This is the site that I get my Matrox drivers from. http://www.matrox.com/mga/drivers/certified_drivers/home.htm
I would d/l them and try an install. I would set the AGP & PCI FSB bus settings to the bios default as this sounds like it might be related to bios.
Good Luck!

I've got the G400Max on an Abit BE6-II. While I didn't have your exact symptoms, I had problems until I got the latest drivers. I wouldn't worry about whether the latest drivers are "certified". Get the latest drivers, even if they are uncertified or even beta. You can always reload the drivers from your installation CD if you have a problem with the latest driver. My experience with four different video cards is that the latest drivers are ALWAYS the best.

FYI - when you boot Windows in "safe mode" Windows loads the standard VGA driver, not your Matrox (or other video card) drivers.

Also, check your refresh rate. This can cause problems. If you have a PNP monitor, set your monitor device setting as "Plug and Play Monitor" rather than your specific monitor designation. Once you get everything else working you can go back to your specific monitor designation -- unless, of course, it is this that is causing your problem.

I loaded the ASUS BIOS upgrade. (1004 4a)
This seemed to cure the boot up problem with the G400MAX. I have a shut down problem to solve and I will be in good shape.

Thanks for your help.
