I must admit it would be great to talk to sysopt members in real time, since I have been using this BBS they have become like a second family, and it would be some thing special to talk as a group every now and then,
So I think I'll put my vote in for it, if it's possible for Sysopt to bring about. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Affirmative..
I remember a long time ago someone mentioned something about an icq chat thing that allowed you to chat with other people that were at the same website you were at. I don't use ICQ so I don't know that much about it, but it sounds like it might work.

I would be nice if it could be done.

I've seen sites use some sort of a java setup that you didn't have to install anything for. This would be better than using icq or other installed clients, because of security. I don't use any of the instant message services anymore. The idea is a good one and I think it would be something I would use.

I agree, there should be a chat room also!
Maybe if enough people want one, SysOpt can make one, if they can't I'd like 2 know why not.

A nice small chat room would be cool. The ability to communicate off topic material, and have real time troubleshooting could be very interesting. I don't think that it would severely interfere with the regular forum traffic, as I prefer UBB (I'm an old usenet lamer! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif ), but it might be a good change of pace.
I also think something in Java would be most appropriate for this. Other's might want IRC or similar, but I'm not interesting in having to deal (and commonly dispose) with these supposed l33t haXoring crackers that always want to show up at any IRC server.

hehe, humorous. You guys are using the name SysOpt as if it's a actual person. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif "Hey you guys, which one of you is Pink Floyd?"
As for a java-chat thingy, I must admit it'd be a neat feature. We could even schedule weekly/monthly meetings to share tips or ask questions.
Of course, if anyone has the know-how to make a java-chat page now, we could sorta test the idea out.

I think that their reffering to Scott (Sysopt) when they mention Sysopt. Since he's one of the System Admin's and Editor's, I guess this post should be directed to him. Other people to acknowledge in this pursuit would be Joel (also Sysopt Editor and Administrator) and Socalgal (Forum Moderator), since they have a rather large amount of input into Sysopt.com .
After thinking about it, it could be that EarthWeb hasn't ever given an ok for a chatroom. I know they now officially own the site, but I don't know to what degree they control it's content.

I think a chat room would be a good idea, but we have to make sure the message boards still got used http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif.
I think we may start asking each other questions in chat, and not have a record on the BBS of the possible answers to questions.
lol, i like the profile of Socalgal in the aboutus page.

I posed the same request to SoCalGal a few months ago, and she was going to bring it up with Scott/Joel. There is a definite concern that the chat room would supersede the bbs, not to mention needing a full-time moderator.
I could see where it could be topic-restricted, though. Make the chat room java and html-enabled. I'm behind a corp. firewall. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

i have thought about the idea of a chat room for sysopt and it sounds like a GREAT idea. the thing that i'd hate to see is a live chat room where people would naturally turn to first for help or questions before posting to a board and waiting for a response .... if this were to happen then the whole purpose of the sysopt would be undermined and none of the 'good stuff' would be archived in any type of searchable database.
if the chat room serves for the board members to interact but the BBS itself does suffer, i'm all for it!

Pink Floyd are those youngsters still about http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
As to the chat room undermining the main BBS for help make it for non tech stuff just general talk only, After all we all post a quite a bit that is not computer related which takes up server space, having achat room for this type would surely make the BBS content more System problem related which you can then book mark.

Instead of a full time moderator in a chat room, you could give Ultimate Members the privilege of being "acting moderators" in the chat room. Just a thought from a senior member...
good idea eli i hadnt thought of that
well jeese i hadnt thought my topic would bring this many replies and votes
thanx to all who voted
so does how does it look sysopt and socogal?
