A Taiwanese election is coming up, and China is rather worried that the winning candidate will want/declare indepedence from mainland China, which still considers Taiwan a renegade province.

The jitters have already hit the Taiwanese stock market, and in the worse case scenario, could end in war which would almost certainly involve the US supporting Taiwan. Naturally this is bad for the people of Taiwan, and for those among us who like Taiwanese products in our PCs. Small specialist manufacturers like Abit, for example. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Just what we need, a war against China! I really hope this guy gets the boot so he can't start WW3.

Well, call me foolish, but soon as I hit 17, I'd be in... I'd feel obligated.

China has ICBM's and have publicly stated they are targeted at the US. They have built up a formidible hi-tech navy, sans carriers.
They can back up every threat now, thanks to Clinton's technology-for-campaign contributions deal. (Traitorous Liar!) But I digress, Taiwan is a powderkeg. You saw how China clamped down on Hong Kong. US ships are not allowed to port there anymore. hmm....

China will not release nukes. The threat is transparent. Do you really think they want to start WWIII? We have enough nukes to level their entire country, while they would only do major damage to some major cities over here. We would "win" that little war. An do not even try to compare China's navy to the US, we would spank them to Tokyo and back. China can threaten Taiwan, but if the US steps in then China should back down. However, if the guy in China is a lunatic....

There will be a war, hopefully sooner than later! Their military is on the rise, ours is decaying. If we meet halfway, I'd give the win to the counrty w/more people...

***edit***

Let me clarify, I am not hoping for war. I simply believe it to be inevitable, and believe we have a better chance of winning the sooner it comes.

Anyone who would volunteer to go to War (death, destruction, devastation) is either a lunatic or has no idea what war is all about. Not to mention, fighting and potentially dying for an Abit mobo? I don't think so. I can speak for experience as having done my time for Uncle Sam. Fighting for your own county is one thing, someone elses is quite another.

My father is currently a Major in the Marine Corps, he went to Desert Storm and several other battles as well as keep the peace over in Panama back in '89-'90 when there were rising conflicts...I personally am not for war, If there is no other alternative than I guess we'll have to fight! But since I'm going into the Air Force to become a pilot, I don't believe I have a choice whether or not to go to war. I just hope the next one won't be a BIG one.

China could "win" a war against us simply by declaring war, firing a couple of missiles, and then surrendering.
We would be destroyed.

Not comparing the two navies Wyvrn, just noting that they have guided missile cruisers, fast frigates, and attack subs now. Ever hear of a Silkworm anti-ship missile? I wouldn't underestimate the Dragon and it's ancient warrior traditions.

I guess the real wild card is, which side would Russia take in a conflict? It is very close to their soil...

Wvryn, russia has some very advanced equiptment, and more nukes then anyone else in the world.......the red october is real, and they got **** like that......Russia would of course take chinas side....since they are now allies for the first time in a LONG LONG time...........hell russia has so many **** nukes they could destroy the world without even launching a nuke outside of thier country(They wouldnt do that of course).

Classic blunder #1 getting involved in a land war in asia.....

More then 10 countires have enough nukes to blow the world over many times........china is one of them, russia has more nuclear tonnage then any other country in the world..
it is almost all mobile too.

I would not go and fight some **** war for any government, draft or no draft.....they would have t0o bugger off whilst I went to canada to go to school http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif .......I especially would not go die for some other country just because we have a financial interest in them...and that is what it would boil down to,not human rights or anything...
or we would already be in a war with china...
plus india and half of asia would likely flock to chinas banner,as well as a few mid eastern states

yep it would be world war........come to think of it.....I would try to go and hide deep in the south american jungle!!!!

China has 1.2 billion people. he have around 340 million. Even with training, our troops would be completely swallowed. Knowing the UN, they wont want to send troops either, they are fearful of China. Everyone is...
