I wanted 2 know everyone's overall opinion on Gateway as a company, because there is one here in my hometown close by me, and I was thinking about applying for a job there this summer. I just wanted to know if they had a good rep. and ur opinion on it too.

It was either that place or www.chipsmart.com (http://www.chipsmart.com)
which also has a place close by me.

I'd be grateful for any input

I have several friends and co-workers who have Gateway computers and they all have had very positive results with them. They all have said that customer support was good also. I went into the Gateway store near me here in DFW and the people seemed pretty knowledgeable and freindly.I also liked the way that they didn't hound me to death after I told them I was just browsing. Stay away from Compusa,or I'll have to brand ya a dingbat like it seems most of their employees are http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
Just my .02 worth. If I didn't build my own stuff, I would probably use Gateway or a Dell. Don't even get me started on Fry's http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif ... C-Ya

Just the Gateway name on your resume would look better than chipsmart or Fry's.

I have both Gateway and Dell systems at home and would have to say that my all around favorite is the Gateway. When friends ask me who to buy a computer from (that is if they don't want me to build it for them) I tell them to go to Gateway. Service is great. They have made it is for newbies to set up the computer out of the box and the computer typically works the first time you hit the power button (my Dell didn't and I had to wade through customer service on a brand new PC, then wait until the next day when they sent onsite service - d**n hard to wait when you have a brand new PC and can't use it http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif !)

Anyway, I'd go for Gateway.

My first "real system" (not counting the RadioShack TRash 80 I'm ashamed to admit I wasted my money on) was a GATEWAY. I still have it, but as soon as I build my next system(ATHLON 600MHz and other parts are on the way),I plan to give it to my sister-in-law.
It may be old and slow (P5 120MHz),but it's still kicking. Also i've always had good dealings with Gateway tech support.

When my dad finally upgraded from his 8088, it was to a Gateway P5-120. He still has it, after nearly 5 years now. And with the few additions i've made to it for him (Voodoo3, P-200MMX, 8.4G, 96Megs), it's still screaming along on all his apps and games. We only had trouble with the first 1.1G HDD (which Gateway promptly replaced 1 day before the end of his warranty), and the 6x CD-ROM, which finally gave it up about a year ago, so installed a 32X Mitsumi for him. Overall an EXCELLENT company I think, and the store right by my house is full of knowledgeable employees.

Insofar as Compusa is concerned, I agree wholeheartedly as far as floor employees are concerned, but their tech department isn't totally idiotic. Hell, I work there.

Gateway, better on your CV for a later date.

Gateway bought out a local company (PC Direct) down under not so long ago, and tehy seem to be getting a good name, except in one area, and that may not be their fault, as they decided to get shot of any gear and components used by PC Direct, they placed them to auction, turns out a lot of the stuff was RMA but some one hard removed the RMA tags, so people thought they were just buying old stock items, after the auction some one was scratching around in the rubbish skip and found all the RMA tags, needless to say a lot of the second hand resellers got real agrovated when they found half the gear they had bid on was duff, and due to local policy could not utilise the Manufacturers warrants.

And, at risk of getting slapped on the wrist, might I add that, to get a good deal on a Gateway box, get hold of their refurb department. Can save you some serious bux over retail.

And, I agree with most here. The machinery is usually top-notch (I've been "associated" with 7 of 'em so far), the majority of their tech staff are on the stick, and the flaming a**holes on the helpdesk are virtually nonexistant.

I'd say a GW2K entry in your dossier wouldn't hurt a bit.
