When my old computer died back in November, my original reason for stumbling across this place, I just bought new pieces and built a new one. I got to thinking though and realized that the old 'puter had a 90watt power supply and I was running 2 hard drives, a floppy and had just installed a CDRW along with my DVD-ROM. The first time I tried to boot with powering all those drives was when everything went south. I thought I fried the motherboard, because it wouldn't even POST after I disconnected a couple of drives.
Do you think I may have just toasted the PS and not the motherboard? Would it hurt anything if I tried the old motherboard with my new PS? I've still got everything...
Sorry about the rambling, just wanted to bounce the idea off of somebody that knows more than I do.

My opinion and I could be wrong....
I would give it a try.
That is how most places test to see if a particular device is bad. Take it out and try it in a good system to see if it is that particular device which is not working. On the board just put the bare essentials. flopyy drive ram and video.
Good-Luck

Sure sounds like it was underpowered.
I'd try a different PS, but I wouldn't tear down your working system just for testing this.

Oh well, it was a good idea while it lasted. I pulled the PS, one of the Hard drives, one of the RAM chips and the CPU out of the new one and stuck them in the old one and hit the power button. No go. No beeps. It is still under warranty, but to get a new one, I'd have to put the Gateway back together and most of it's pieces are in the new one. Unless you think they'll let me bring just the motherboard back...

Jeff,
Not so fast. I seem to remember that Gateway used a proprietary pinout for their P/S-to-Mobo connector. Maybe someone else can comment on this and verify??
I would try the assumed decedent with the processor, the 90W P/S, 1 stick of memory, a single hard drive and a floppy. That's it. See if she POSTs up on you then.
If so, then just buy another Gateway P/S which should be expensive as hell for a 250-300W version!
Good luck...

She wouldn't even post with the 90W PS in and only 1 hard drive and the floppy hooked up.
Like I said it is still under warranty, but I didn't know it at the time and used all the drives and other components to make my new computer. I was just trying to save Gateway the trouble of giving me a new one, and saving myself the trouble of putting the Gateway back together and being without either computer while they fix it. Then pulling all the parts out of the Gateway again and rebuilding my new computer and saving the money to make a second out of the Gateway.
