I have always looked for high end vid cards for my computers as I am a gamer. I haven't really kept up with the low end video cards. I need a good video card for a w2k server I am building. Preferably something under $50. Don't need high performance graphics output, just reliabilty and compatibility with w2k. It is going on a bp6 mobo. Thanks.

OEM TNT2 Vanta. pricewatch (http://www.pricewatch.com/1/37/1814-1.htm) has quite a few hovering around the $50 mark.

If you really want to keep the price low look around for an ATi Xpert98. Perhaps an OEM Matrox g200 8mb if you can find one.

bdog,

On my BP6 servers I use left over SIS and Matrox video cards. They work just fine since you will mainly use it for 2d. Guess if you can find it in the local shops for cheaps, it would be great. Mine were cast offs. Those old parts have its uses.

BTW, u still running away, don't see u anymore. Guess I'm lagging.

Old Matrox G200's are excellent for low end systems. They have excellent 2d quality, plus the ability to play many current games. Expect to pay around $20-30 US for a old card.

If you want a new card, how about the STB Velocity 100. It's bascially an 8meg Voodoo3 2000, and sells for about $45 new. It is as fast as the v3 in lower res for 3d (esp. if you enable the second TMU through a registry hack). As for 2d, it uses the same exact RAMDAC as the 2000, so it looks pretty good.

Hi bdog

I'm using an ATI Xpert98 (PCI) on with my W2K. Also works with Linux (Caldera).

Thanks for ther replies. It looks like there is a variety of cards that will work. I guess I will just get the cheapest of the above mentioned when I go to get the system. The way our University has started doing purchasing is a real pain. No more petty cash. Everything must be done with PO's so I usually just get everything in one place and take what they have.
