A friend has given me an older hard drive but no documentation. It is labeled "CMS Enhancements, Inc.". But I cannot seem to find a site for same. It appears to have been manufactured by Seagate because it has a Seagate motor and PC board but no specific Seagate numbers. The other numbers were not recognized by Seagate on their drive site. What I really need is the Jumper configuration. The jumpers are located on the side of the PC board and there are six pairs. I am hoping to use this as a "slave" on an older 486 DX machine.
If any one can help me out or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it very much.
I get a "kick" out of reading this forum, as it is very enlightening.
Thanks,
Alan

If you can post the model number of that CMS drive, I may be able to help. I have an old database with some of the CMS drives included. Not all the listings show a jumper diagram, but all we can do is try.

M1Pilot,
Thanks for the reply and offer.
On the top is the following info.
Bar code label with CMS Enhancements, Inc name.
bar code info
F00942 B040A5 (1-st line)
509755 (2-nd line)

Separate bar code label right under the above label is:
*913001-005*

On one end and one side there is a small bar code label with *CP206840*

on one side there is an additional label (non-bar code) with the following:
F W3 SGA 016 03/2.02 A1

That is all the Identification on the HD other than the identification on the end plate of the Seagate motor which is:
MCC 10-02 DC 042
P/N 55369-001
and PC board which is:
*03905W*

Hope that this helps. You efforts are most appreciated.
Best Regards

It looks like the "B040A5" number in the first line is the actual model number of the HDD. My database (Diskbase) lists a B040A5-N in the CMS listings, however the data is sketchy and does not show any jumper settings. All it shows is that is a 40 MB 3.5" IDE HDD with a 28.00 m/s access time.

The drive numbers before (B040A3-I3) and after (B040A6) the B040A5-N in the listings, however, do provide jumper settings and appear to be similiar drives (capacity, encoding type, and interface). If your drive has the same jumper layout, possibly you could use these:

Jumpers on HDD:
ACT
DSP
C/D
HSP

Connectors:
PWR / (1)PIN ONE / ALT PWR

Single Drive:
Jump ACT & C/D

Dual Drive Master:
Jump DSP & C/D

Dual Drive Slave:
Unjumped

HDD BIOS parameters for those other two drives are:

Heads-2
Cyl-1045
Sec-40
LZ-auto

Again, these figures are'nt necessarily going to apply for your drive, but there's a good chance that they will work. Hopefully you can "auto detect" these parameters in your BIOS.

Hope this works for you, good luck.
