Since the discovery of a few parameters in Windows95 to tweak network settings several years ago, a plethora of apps to do that has emerged. When I see all these "winboost" and "tweakdun" adds, it makes me sick. All these apps do is change the plain old registry settings. But why shell out $10-20, if there're free apps that do just that.

tweakdun can be had for free, if you know where to look http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif The performance upgrade only applies to 56k and below modems (uses 576 packet size) and offers modest improvement. Just get cable or dsl and get it over with http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I don't exactly know why, but I get the very best performance with the LARGER packet size.

I've found that one of the best ways to get your dialup connection running faster is to use the modem tweak guide at http://www.tweak3d.net

Tweakdun is not freeware. Piracy is illegal and will not be condoned here.
I have tried them ALL and believe me, they are NOT all created equal. Tweakdun is one of the best because it actually does what it says it does. With the others, it's a **** shoot as to whether they modify the correct registry settings.
My advice? Find the info and edit the registry yourself - that's the best way to do it. If you can't or don't feel comfortable doing that (which is most people), you can try one of the freeware apps, but if you don't have the knowledge to look at the registry and see what it has done, then you're not going to know whether or not it worked, in which case I would recommend Tweakdun because it WILL change the proper settings.
It may do some good in Win98, but it's mostly for Win95. I don't know if it's even needed for NT.
BTW, if you use one of those apps and later get a cable or DSL modem, be sure to change your settings back to the defaults because the 576 MTU setting will wreak havoc with DSL/Cable performance.

I tried them all and I didnt get any better results with any of them then I got from some good modem init strings and a little good old tweaking.............I personally wouldnt pay for Tweakdun, when there is a freeware program called "MAXMTU" that is as good, and it is held in high regard by "Dan"
over at tweak3d.
Smokey is right though,tweak3d has an ecellent modem tweak guide.
The best thing I could tell you is that if you have a winmodem turn flow control to software........and maybe max out your recieve buffer.....oh yea I almost formgot, you do not want to connect at over like 44000 bps.....it is really not faster.

BTW email me if you need any help choosing the right modem tweaking program for you.
Neoplanet has the same features as tweak DUN built in as "modem booster" or something like that.
It's free.
