Is it true?.. I've heard that AMD processors and riva tnt cards don't like each other very much. I just upgrade by processor from a pentium 233 to a AMD-k2-400 and is experencing radom lock up/hangs. First i thought it was my video driver.. but it wasn't(2.17)Please help me. Im also using a fic 503+, the new version..

Are you using stock CL drivers? If so, you may want to go with Nvida's drivers. Also,if your running 32bit,try lowering it to 16 and see what happens.

What chipset/bios do you run? I have a VIA MVP chipset with an Award bios.
Have you flashed your bios? Ever? Try that. Update your bios and see if that doesn't help. I think you need it for AMD's over (I think 300mhz).
I run a K62/380 and a TNT2. No problems, no fuss, no muss...
And by the way, I get better results using the drivers that came on my Creative Labs installation CD than I did using the detonator 2.17 drivers...
Just go to
http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/rivatnt/
Just follow the tips there... Especially the registry tweaks. They really helped me with performance.
But, flash your bios, that should take care of your compatibility.
Good Luck In All...

I run a CL TNT on a FIC 503+. No need to flash your BIOS if you have a recent version of the board. It probably won't help your compatability problems, and BIOS flashes CAN go wrong (I'm living testimony!). If you tweak your BIOS according to the recommendations at http://www.tweak3d.net/
tweak/rivatnt/,everything should work OK. By the way, the 2.08 drivers seem to work the best. I have tried later versions with no luck. If you read the various Riva TNT forums on the web, you will find a lot of other folks have gone back to the 2.08 drivers for stability reasons.

Yeah, JMorrell, creative labs says their drivers are based on the NVidia 2.08 drivers. But like I said, I get the best results (frame rates, overall look, etc.) with these drivers. Came right off the instal CD.
Bios flashes can go wrong, but, my board in particular didn't want to support over 300 or 350 AMD chips. The flash took care of that. I did experience problems after putting the new chip in, and flashing took care of this situation. Now, obviously I can't say this'll take care of hiw problem, all I can say is that it did mine.
Good Luck, and Merry Christmas/Happy Hannukah

I use a K6-2 400 with a CL Riva Tnt.
I got rid of my issues by flashing the VIDEO bios and upgrading the drivers using CL's current drivers and bios update for that card. They work better than Nvidia Reference drivers.
Go Here to get them http://support.soundblaster.com/files/download.asp?OS=Win95&prod=riva
Do not use Colorific and 3Deep
software...waste of time and space.

I have an AMD-6 K2 350 (32 MB RAM) with a Award/Via P5MVP-A4. I recently won a Viper V770 graphics accelerator card that I cannot use. After much frustration and troubleshooting I found out that my particular motherboard is not compatible with this card. Flashed the BIOS, etc., and I still can't get any video (S3 Vision 964 PCI). Bummer. So I'm selling it for $100 (brand new still in box).

Cracker009, several issues could cause the type of problems your indicating.
First, in your bios setup, make sure these things are set as directed:
Assign Video IRQ: enable
Video Pallete Snoop: disable
Video Caching: disable
Video Shawdow: disable
Reboot, then try it out. If this doesn't help, you might try disabling "cache read + cpu write combining" in the bios. This option seems to cause severe compatibility issues with some AMD + nVidia setups (almost case by case scenerio).
I also assume you have loaded the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard. Drop by FIC's website and make sure. Also, about the various vid drivers out there, as long as you have a set based on 2.08 or better you should be o.k.
If all this fails, you can try a last recourse registry hack for Win9x. In the registry (Start, Run, regedit), go to the directory:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NVIDIA Corporation\RIVA TNT\System\
Create a DWORD Value by right clicking in the right-hand window. Name the DWORD Super7Compat (capitalization matters) and change its value to 1. This will usually hinder performance by 2-4%, but its better than suffering random crashes.

I too, have problems with my AMD K6-2 450, riva tnt2 ultra, Iwill xa100 plus m/b. I have flashed my bios w/ the latest? patches. So far, OK, but time will tell.
NOPE. Still having problems. DWORD Super 7 Compat at value 1.

i had a fic va 503+, k6-2 400 and viper v550 and did not have any problems once i had installed the proper drivers from VIA for the agp. before i installed the most recent agp drivers (this was about 8 months ago) i couldn't get anything to work for long.

I was in my local Trade suppliers the other week, and there was a guy with the same probelm has you. He just couldn't get his riva to work with his AMD. And the Tech dept, said it was a compatabilty probelm with the V/C and the M/b. But I forgot what M/B he said he had

Make sure you have the latest VIA "4 in 1" drivers that were posted 1/3/00. You might want to let Win98 control bus mastering though. http://www.viatech.com/drivers/index.htm
