Well, many colleges have become fedup with the amount of bandwidth that Napster has been hogging so they have taken steps to eliminate its use. I live off campus, and I do my Napster'n via 56K so it hasn't really affected me. I am a music pirate, but I use a rowboat, and a leaky one at that (so I am not as bad). Anyway, how have colleges been blocking napster use, and is there anyway around it? Some of my friends are suffering from severe withdrawl. Lemme know of any ideas.

Most colleges have some firewall already set up. To ban Napster, they prob added it somewhere on that firewall script to deny all traffic to and from the Napster main server IP.

As for ways around it, prob nothing easy. certainly no way I can think of. I guess if you had an insider who knew how to modify the script to allow certain IP's to recieve nap you could do it.

BTW this is all pure conjecture.

What exactly is napster?

Napster is a server, of sorts, of MP3's. Evertone who logs on shares their MP3's, and viola, you have 2.5 terabytes. And there is a way to get around that block. There are a few websites that run by sorting thru napster and pulling songs you want, all by way of good ole netscape or internet explorer

I finally downloaded napster the other day and this is awesome. I don't even have to bother with recording tapes and records now. I already have a gig worth of music.
