Please someone help me.
I cant switch my pc on unless i either
a) switch on my external modem first OR
b) turn the mains power off and on
the pc is second hand and i cant get hold of the seller.
The pc is a Packard Bell and acording to the back the model no is PB9450
Someone has suggested that it may be set up for a LAN and a jumper may need changing but which one.
I cant even tell what the motherboard model is.
HELP

I have a very similar situation on one pc so I am interested too.

My system won't turn on unless I unhook the serial cable that connects my Zoom ext. modem from my system and wait a minute or two. Really wierd. The -5V is low and the 3.3V is running at 3.13-3.20 so it may be the PS but I am interested in ideas.

yes, it could (in both of your cases) be a shot PS, but i wouldn't bet on it...

i noticed that both of you have an external modem, so i have been contemplating the possible probs with that (specifically) and came down to 2 possibles...

the first is the connect cord (or whatever) to the puter... what sort of cord is it? (usb, serial, etc?)... and what brand (or quality or whatever) is the cord itself? (is it insulated, heavy-duty, or what?)

just maybe try out different combos with the cords (maybe consider getting a new one)...

the second would be voltage regulator on the modems... if you know how to, then just check them... they may be running at double-capacity or something...

and what voltage are they at? (5vDC or maybe 10, or just whatever)... if you don't know the voltage (IOW, it doesn't say), then just check to see if it looks (or even feels) hot or burnt in any way...

this could be a key clue to see if it is running hotter than it should... this could cause a "short" (not really a short, but whatever) between the puter and the modem that'd do something similar to what you're describing...

if this works, then report back with that news... if it doesn't, then just tell us what you tried and someone will come up with your solution...

and regarding the voltage regulator... if it is running faster than normal, it'll need to be replaced, so (if it comes to that) then just tell me and i'll help you out there...

and good luck! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
