Im running 98, and I have been for 6 months. Everything is fine. Ive just purchased a cd burner, and made a backup, but im wondering if thats good on a 6 month old load. Does disk defrag in 98 keep it fresh?? Would i notice a difference in reloading over my current load?
One more question, when I do defrag, there is quite a bit of data that wont be moved-optomized-(the lengend shows them as white clusters with red corners).Im assuming these are system files, but the bad thing is they are scattered around my hd. When you do a backup via cd, does it image your hd's exactly, or will the system files be in better order??
Thanks for reading, http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Good post - My own experience is that WIN98 runs a little cleaner. I really never thought about it before, but yes - loading additional programs doesn't seem to hurt WIN98 as much as WIN95.

Reinstalling doesn't seem to fair as well, though. I find it better doing a reformat with WIN98.

The image question: I don't know.

i do believe the try-n-buy NU 3.0 (speed disk) will take care of that fragmentation for you.

The only Norton speed disk i can find is for NT , not win 95 or 98. Is there a version of speed disk for 98, or does anyone know of another comparable shareware program?
Thanks a bunch!

Your most likely seeing the virtual memory swap file. This isn't movable during defrag.

Your win98 shouldn't be sluggish...Just make sure you run ScanDisk or SpeedDisk or other Hard Disk Utilities and make sure you always have enough hard drive space available...

Likewise I can't find a try before you by verision of speed disk for Win98.

Often wondered about those odd little system file clusters (not the great big chunk that is obviously the swap file and the smallish chunk that is probably the registry, but the little bits that get scattered across the disk, or course they could just be bits of the registry as it grows - but not all of them). I have pondered with the idea of doing a 'dir /as /s' to find all the system files and then removing the system attribute from some of them (once i've worked out what they are) and then defragging. I've just copied my system to another disk, so perhaps I'll plug the old one back in and have a go.

Also in answer to you other question, I recently copied one drive to the other (using xcopy with the appropriate options) and that seemed to defrag these system files - leaving the registry as an identifiable chunk, so the backup idea should work.

P.S You can defrag the registry in dos (not a dos window!) by renaming it then copying it back to the correct name so it ends up in a contigous block (assuming you do a Win defrag beforehand). Then delete the renamed version and reset the attributes. But be careful!

NIME, Not In My Experience. I've had excellent results with performance staying at a high level! Use Norton's Speed Disk about once a week and keep those extraneous files out of your way! The real danger is software putting stuff in you startup folder
(Hear me MICROSOFT!) and in the startup keys of your registry. Also make sure and keep your Start Menu clean as possible. Most people only use about 10 to 30 percent of that junk. I delete all the uninstall, helps, and readme's from there and consolidate until nothing is more than 2 or 3 clicks away. Living with '98... and loving it!

Well I found a great free-ware proggie from the Ziff-Davis web site called "Start-up Cop" with in it you can save "profiles" of what you want to have start when you boot up you puter! makes it easy to manage and change to different setups with out having to remember what you liked and disliked before! Try it out http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I remember having a problem trying to find the download for NU3 (SpeedDisk).

I am pretty sure that once I was in the Symantec site, I had to do a search (within the site, the search panel on the left) and put in Norton Utilities 3, then it brought me to where I could download it. If you try this, let us know if that worked - it should.

BTW - you're running Win98 rite? To find out what's REALLY running in the background, to to Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Info/Software Environment/Running Tasks
